I have working at a independent agency in orange county for about 5 months now. We mostly do SR22/ DUI auto type policies. The people here are great the problem is I am not learning how to do anything other than auto insurance, I am licensed in P&C and would like to learn how to write homeowners/ commercial lines. I am 25 and hungry to learn and become successful in this business. If any one has advice or is looking to mentor someone with tons of drive please let know!

Oldinsuranceguy thank you for the reply, I have seriously been considering that option however I don't want to "throw in the towel" just yet. Do you have any tips or tricks that you would pass on to a newbie in the industry?

If you want to stay at your current employer but learn other lines of business, you will have to do research and study on your own. You can:

- study for exams from The Institutes (CPCU, ARM...)
- read insurance magazines
- take a look at insurance applications for lines of business that interest you

However, the best way to learn about insurance is by doing it. So moving to an agency that offers more than one line of business is your best shot.

Thank you for the advise. what additional information could you give me on the Institutes?
I checked out there website and am still not 100% on what they do.

The Institutes provides educational programs in insurance. You can earn a designation by studying and passing exams.

It's a way to learn more about insurance and earn a designation which might give you a little bit more credibility.

They have a lot of different programs to choose from.
