I'm not really a newbie into the field, since I already got my licensed a couple years back and kept renewed it. But haven't done any formal training or selling, except joined MLM insurance groups such as HBW and FFS. I got no training into the products they're selling, rather I was taught to just recruit and I hated it...so I quit and work a regular job 6-6.

Now, I want to get back into the game and need your help. What is a reputable company that will offer coaching/training with a veteran in the Metro Detriot area? I dont mind if I have to start out as a captive agent, because I need the training and support.

Thank you for your help...

t couple years, then I'm on my own. Should I go about getting my licensing on my own, or would this be a better way to do it? Sounds like I'll need to be working my full time job in the meantime while training with Farmers if I go that way. That brings me to my next couple of questions. How reallistic is it for people becoming agents to be working a full time job then training/selling on the side? How long does it typically take? I mean I could do long hours for quite some time, but I feel like I'll get burnt out and want to do something else. I'd love to find somewhere (probably a pipe dream) that would have a base pay, and I could bust my ass and go head first into it and prove myself. Is there such a company or possibilit

One problem is that captive companies are flooded with brand new agents right now that know nothing. The ones that do want new agents just want you to write your friends and family members and then when you stop producing on your own, they get rid of you. Back in the old days, captive companies use to really train new agents and the agent would stick with them forever. But now, if they did take the time to invest in you, then you would just take what you learn and go captive. If you are going to just do this on the side, then you need to go independent. I would start off by calling several IMO or MGA's and seeing what kind of training or help they offer. Also talk to at least 10 other successful agents and see what they are doing and how you can copy them.

You can also learn a lot on your own.

I will share some of my ideas with you. You can click here to see a few of them.

You can also email me and I can send you somethings that might help you.

I recommend 2 things when you get into the insurance business.

1. Go Independent
2. Keep a full time job

You make pennies when you go captive and it's very very difficult to make enough money to live off. Go independent and get your appointments through a good GA that offers tons of training. Keep your regular job and do this on the side until you feel confident enough to pull the trigger.

How do you go independent but get appointed by a GA or a MGA?

If you are a business owner and get products from a or more wholesaler(s) and resale to your client, are you independent business owner? In insurance, the independent agents differ from captive agents for their freedom to pick and choose which product from which IMO to offer to their clients, just like you choose your wholesalers. But you know sometimes, you enter exclusive contract with one wholesaler to sell their product only. That is the same in insurance as captive agent. The agent vs. IMO is similar to the Business owner vs. wholesaler, whether you are captive or independent.

If you go captive New York Life is the one to call. The training and support there is great. They give you a three year training allowance and you will get the knowledge you need to be successful. You are not totally captive either. I would just check it out before you make a decission. If not NYL then go independant.

There are many agents failed to meet NYL sales quota and dropped off without taking full advantage of their 3 year training allowance.

You are not an employer of the GA and you are not captive.
You are independent and own your own business. All of your appointments are with the carriers and they all recognize you as the agent of record. The General Agent's responsibility is to train you and help out with support as much as possible. The added bonus to you is typically you get higher commission and advanced commission.

The advantage for a GA is we make overrides on your production.
