This does not compute. NYL is a life house. Aflac is a worksite house. They are two totally different paradigms. What you are asking is "Should I live in New York City or should I live in Los Angeles?"

Do you want to sell voluntary group benefits to businesses? Or do you want to sell life, annuities, DI, etc., most likely to individuals?

It's like asking "Should I have popcorn or ice cream?"

There is no wrong answer here. What do YOU want to do? Figure that out... and do it! If it does not work out... do something else.

Sorry I guess I should have been more specific. What I am really fishing for is input about the two, who provides the best oppurtunity to succeed, which will provide a better income potential. Can I make a decent income. What I sell is not going to sway me one way or the other. I've heard a lot of "aflac has totally saturated the market and no one communicates, aflac agents showing up one after the other"

Re: New York Life or AFLAC ?

NYL is a class organization and will provide you with every opportunity to succeed. They are on par with MassMutual, Northwestern Mutual and The Prudential. Big names, recognition in the advanced markets. With NYL you will have the opportunity to learn how to sell serious products to businesses and a little to families on the side if that is your intent. You will learn about things like SERPs, Buy/Sell, Key Man (Person), Carve Outs, Deferred Comp and so on.

With AFLAC, you'll be selling schlocky cancer products.

NYL is filet mignon, AFLAC is ground chuck.

This statement concerns me a bit. Dignity and professionalism should dictate that you sell quality products that will be there to support your clients needs. Products that stand the test of time. The three companies I mentioned in my previous post have all been around since the civil war.

Basically, NYL will get you appointments with the CEO. AFLAC will get you appointments with the janitorial staff. Which would you rather work with?

Got to NYL, do your training and immediately team up with a veteran agent there and take that agent on all of your appointments and split the commission.

You can probably (possibly) make a living with a company like AFLAC (depending on market saturation in your area). Trust me, I speak from experience 3 years NML...nothing makes your weekend better than walking out of a business with three applications for life insurance in hand and an annual premium of $150,000 to fund a corporate insurance plan on the three officers. With NYL (or Mass or NML) you can do that kind of sale, with AFLAC, no way in hell you're going to be able to get in the door and write any kind of premium like that.

Re: New York Life or AFLAC ?

Having gone the NYL route all I can say is it will depend... Did you look around at the office? How many new agents do they have on board? What is the general attitude of the people there?

I learned a great, great deal from my days at NYL. It came basically from the trainer and the office manager and the girls behind the counter. The sales manager was no help at all. All but a few of the other agents saw you as short time and just basically wanted to know where you kept your client files...

Your success will depend on you, and I would still reccommend NYL but alot of your experience will depend on the other people there. I came in under the impression I was building my own business, wasn't really the case. Most of my conversations with sales manager centered around what gave him the best overrides. By the time they got a good gm in there, I think I was damaged goods. I couldn't or wouldn't trust them as far as I could spit. You'll find out pretty quickly if they are there "for" you or to "use" you. Even the big, great name companies operate pretty shady in some areas.

Re: New York Life or AFLAC ?

That's the phrase of the day! Next time I'm looking into ancillary products I'll ask whether or not they're schlocky.

Aren't ancillary products pretty much schlock anyway? What's the difference between a policy that will pay in cash if you cut off your ring finger (not any of the others, just the ring finger) and oh, say, rust proofing a new car or the infamous "stem lube"?
