were you speaking with a bankruptcy attorney? if so, of course he would tell you to file. thats how he gets paid. imho, you should consult a debt counseling agency which is a non-profit and get their opinion or speak with an attorney that does nothing by debt consolidation and negotiation and get their opinion.
as far as if they can fire you or not, why not have someone call anonymously and flat out ask what their policy on bk is?
