Hello, I am new here. I have been all over the internet and somehow stumbled upon this forum. My name is Kathy. I am 49 years old. My husband is from Canada and now lives in the United States since 2008. He is 65 and does not have enough quarters to qualify for Medicare. He is close to 6 years from having enough quarters but really does not want to have to work for another 6 years. I am about to lose my insurance thru my employer I suppose because of the economy. Is there any medical insurance company that will cover both me and my husband ?? He has the option of purchasing Medicare from the government but the monthly policy premium is astronomical and there is no way that we could ever afford it and that is just for the part "A" alone. Any suggestions ?? Thank You in advance.

That's it ?? No other suggestions from anybody ???

Wow. Sorry I wasted my time stopping here. And by the way, I do have a full time job. You do realize that the job situation is still pretty bleek in this country .... right? Wow.

Wow is right. What did you expect to get here? Medicare is a program you pay into and then receive back. Many have paid into it for over 40 years. You can't receive without paying in. If the cost is too much an option would be to find employment where the employer provides health insurance or He can work longer until he qualifies. Don't be upset with the messenger because you don't like the message. Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you.

Kathy, the problem is you posted this:
"He is close to 6 years from having enough quarters but really does not want to have to work for another 6 years."

That angers a lot of us that work our enitre lives, paying into this system in order to receive Medicare when it's time. Healthcare costs are much much much higher, the older we get. Sorry, but that's the truth. Therefore, premiums are much higher. Most people would not be able to afford those premiums if they just had to pay them with the increases each year. That is the reason behind paying into Medicare...so we could afford our premiums when we reach that age. You are getting angry and feel you should be entitled to something just because you want it. Life doesn't work that way. I understand your husband "really does not want to have to work for another 6 years." You have the option of paying the true cost of the coverage or working for it. Nobody owes your husband for gracing us with his presence. I'm sorry for being blunt.

As if we asked you to come here?

Why not go to OZ, or your UK? You seem to be socialist. Sorry to respond as an American like this (because Americans pay over 90% of world bills and MORE), but when I see a DOPE write as such...GET 'her OUT!

I believe you need to go back to Toronto, and see the major beneficiary of THAT hospital - hanging in a huge portrait right when you walk in!

Coronal Sanders of KFC - OF AMERICA!

Kathy, I read your first post and thought Wow, ......... I keep typing a response then deleting it. Let me just say. I am not very far behind your husband in age. I do not want to work anymore either, However, someone needs to pay my bills. And I have paid into this system my whole life.

As far as the job market. 90% of us are commission only self employed. No paid vacations, sick leave or paid benefits.

I hear Canada has a free system. That is always an option.

Good luck to you.

I know somebody in your same situation, husband and wife, I work with him at Domino's where we are part time delivery drivers. They are from Colombia and don't speak ANY English (that's why he drives pizzas for a living). In his country he was Civil Engineer working in large construction projects. Super nice guy, surprises me he does not speak any English given his level of education and culture. He is 73 now and has had a couple of heart attacks already. All he needs now is 4 more quarters to complete his 40 quarters. He is smart and strong and knows he HAS to make it.
I know somebody else who is claiming her aging parents (82 & 73) over from South America. Her parents cannot work anymore due to health issues. She will have to pay a lot of money to get them covered, she has no choice.
If this people is willing to do all that (and more) to get coverage, why not you??
This is America. We are the country of freedom. Love it or leave it says the saying.
Come on, you too can make it happen... I know you can!!! Good Luck!!!
