Here they go again. This from Thurs. They couldn't finagle the p. option so let's try it again under a different name.
Oooooooh, evil "for profit" companies. What a joke. 88 cents out of every dollar goes to pay claims. Someone has to administer? Without profit there is no money to pay salaries, etc.
The govt. will do it cheaper / better? People are so stupid. They think in terms of a zero sum game. "If we remove the for profit insurance companies then it will cost us less and we will receive more benefit." What they will do is lose competition and efficiency.
"What, you don't want to wait 6 mos. and use the doctor we tell you to use? What's that? You're paying more for your coverage than you did before the OPM took over? You want to speak to my supervisor? Can't do it mame, he's at Camp David. Sorry to hear that your not pleased mame, but we're the govt. so don't complain to loud or you may be considered in violation of the patriot act?"

Non-profit plan
The Senate Democratic negotiators' agreement replaces the proposed public option with a national non-profit plan featuring policies offered by private insurers and administered by the government office that oversees coverage for federal workers.
The federal Office of Personnel Management would negotiate with private insurers to offer national non-profit health plans similar to those offered to federal employees.

That part is hilarious. Can anyone imagine what it would cost a carrier, with everyone working for free, to offer a family a plan with coverage the likes of which congress enjoys? Of course, the public couldn't afford that and then they leave the state and you get your public option by default. Nice.

Non-profit does not mean folks work for free. Churches, most private schools, NFP hospitals all have folks on salary.

NFP organizations are now allowed to make payouts of excess earnings to stockholders, but they are allowed to make a profit. Profits must be plowed back into the company.

KP is a NFP organization and there are a few NFP Blue's still around although most have converted to stock companies and a few are mutual companies.

Just because a company is designated a 501(c)(3) organization does not mean they deliver product at a lower price than for profit companies. Congress is using their own stupidity about how business really works and preying on the ignorance of the voting public.

Worse than the script above is that when the normal person talks to a government agency they get a low-level clerical person who knows nothing more than what's in the manual in front of him. Referring a problem to a supervisor is an indication on their annual evaluation that they are not "problem solvers". If you haven't experienced this then just call Social Security for a nice chat.

As a retiree from the Department of Defense, I continued the health plan that I had carried as a federal employee (33 yrs) and I've just rec'd my notification that my part of the monthly premium for 2010 that will be deducted from my retirement pay is $400.97 for myself and my spouse. The government share of the premium is $814.75 per month for a total of $1215.72. Does that sound like a bargain to anyone? :nah: BTW, federal employees have watched every year as their choice of carriers has been greatly reduced because the carriers don't like the gov't contracts.

$1215/mo for husband & wife coverage. I hope you get free massages with that.

From your PCP, not your wife, although getting them from your wife should come automatically with the marriage contract. I know that is what mine says.

The two largest health insurer's in Montana covering about 80% of the citizens are non-profit. The Blues being the largest.
