Obama Allowing States to Opt Out

By 2014 Obama is allowing any state to opt out of health care reform....if they can do an equal or better job.

This impacts states like MA where full implementation of the PPCA was up in the air. This also impacts states like Vermont which is planning a single payer system.

The catch for others states that are fighting PPCA is obvious; they must implement their own state-run program with benefits and premiums equal to or better than the health reform law.

There is nothing on the table for any state to opt out of implementing the law while also not implementing a like system.

So here is the trillion dollar question, what if a state opts out, but doesn't implement a similiar system? What is the penalty?

VolAgent: I agree, this Obama edit begs the question, so what if the state doesn't measure up to the federal program..Nice job with this law Obama.

Even if a state opts out there is no way they are going to be able to reach the law's goals. Even the Fed. Gov. will not be able to reach those goals.

affordability? There is no way! The law has done nothing to address the cost of care.

The only way I see the exchange having a chance is if the feds. subsidize the premium and with a conservative house there no way.

Per the PPCA legislation, it's voluntary for any state to administer an exchange. However, that state's residents are still subject to the provisions of obtaining coverage or face a penalty.

What states are fighting is the mandate to purchase insurance and also having to pony up more money since full premium assistance will be 133% of FLP instead of the current 100% of FLP.

There's a lot more to this than has been written regarding the impact on states. There's only "X" amount of money to go around and if people are forced to purchase coverage or pay a penalty that's less they have to spend on local goods and services. So while it's a windfall for the name brand carriers it'll likely cause severe harm to local economies.

I pay around $500 for family coverage and earn over 400% of FLP. Force me to pay $2,000 and month and ok - but there goes our trips to local restaurants.

Shoot, no restaurants, AND I will have to start showing my real hair color. Not pretty!
