Obamacare Strikes

Client with Golden Rule since 2006. Premiums increase every year to finally, they have had enough and agreed to look at alternates.

Quoted Humana HSA, slightly higher deductible but saving $100 or so per month.

At least until Obamacrap struck . . .

One child diagnosed with ADD but not requiring meds. This is the first time I have tried moving a family with kids under 19 to a new plan and ran smack into Obamacrap.

Normally I would suggest a rider for the ADD since the condition is quite mild, not requiring medication.

But Obama says no.

So in lieu of a rider the child's premium goes from $62 to $155, effectively killing the sale.

But Obama said our premiums would go down. Did he lie?

That seems odd. I recently had a Humana app with a child that had ADD and was on meds and they only rated her up 25%. Are you sure they didn't underwrite it as another condition by mistake?

Had the same issue with H1 with acne meds. Family had come off of a benefit-rich group plan, and they have 2 teenage daughters so they were of course on several very expensive meds (which their great group plan covered pretty well I guess). Anyway, both were rated, one at 80%, the other at 500% (yes 500). So instead of getting a rider (and the parents maybe deciding to give Proactiv a try) they were stuck. We even had the underwriter send us a spreadsheet outlining what the cost of the meds would be per month because we had never seen that before.

From the rider, "A special class premium of 150% has been applied to PDN . . . . as of the effective date. The reason for the rate up is due to ADD/ADHD.

Andrea, you can use the Rx search on the H1 website to get Rx pricing. I use that quite often.

For Arizona, I found the following maximum rate-ups that carriers will apply to children under age 19 (and to adults before it becomes a declination):

Blue Cross - 80%
Health Net - 150%
Humana - 500%
Cigna - 400% I was told, then told it has changed, but I don't care because I'm not getting $0 commission on the whole family for a GI kid.
Aetna - who cares - I didn't even ask
UH1 - I think it's unlimited rate-up, but not sure
