I am an independent broker working with another independent broker that has been very successful for 33 years (he has taken me under his wing). He is however not really into technology.

I finally convinced him to hire someone to make a proper website. The problem is I really don't know what a proper Insurance and financial planning website should have on it.

What we offer:

Everything but P&C

I know I want it google optimized but other than that I just don't know.

Can I please get some guidance.

i would create a website for each product i wanted to sell. and go after niche markets an agency website is mainly your business card and you can rank better for individual websites. your boss may not want to spend the money it will cost to create multiple websites but this is what has worked for me. im sure others on here will disagree. agency websites dont rank as well as niche market websites where you can go after your target keywords.
hope this helps

Super Web Agent

Here are some basic ideas for a website:

You will need a Home Page (obviously), an About Us page for your bios, a Contact Us page for directions to your office including contact information, a page for your products and services, and potentially a page for testimonials (if you are allowed buy compliance to have them).

Also, you will want to think about having some sort of Local Partners page where you can include links to other people's websites that you partner with (this can help build traffic to your website if you put your website on their site).

I would also have a Resource Center where you link to current news on your products, press releases on your company, and articles that you have written. The more local content that you can write (including the name of your city and surrounding area) the more local traffic will come to your website and the higher your rankings will get on Google.

Hope this helps!

Super Web Agent

Actually agency websites probably rank very well, but for search terms with next to zero search volume. Nobody will go searching for your agency name. You may rank #1 for your agency name and get zero volume.

People will look for answers to questions: which is why niche websites built to rank on target keywords (phrases people actually use in searches) will generate more traffic over time.

By agency website do you mean a website such as JoeBlowAgency.com?

Having a keyword rich domain is a plus but properly using keywords in your your title tags, the anchor text on your inbound links and your content can easily overcome a "bad" domain name.

If you have a lot of good will associated with the agency name, it is easy to spell, doesn't have common misspellings or alternate spellings (like Stephen and Steven), using the agency name or a truncated version of it can be helpful.

Just leave the name it out of your title tags and most of your anchor text.

As a web designer and marketing consultant, I agree with most of what's been said about creating an agen'ts website. I also tell clients that niche sites are a great way to funnel visitors back to your company. By using a niche site, the information can feel more informative and less like a commercial. Still all of your sites need to have multiple functions like: lead generating forms, a blog, social marketing tools, mobile ready, and even multimedia like video, photo galleries, podcasts.

My Other Tips
1. Blogs will bring genuine traffic to you if you keep the information topical and not a always sound like a sales pitch.
2. Using RSS News feeds is a great way of having more content on your site.
3. Media. A big way to add "viral marketing" is to create short 2 minute videos and even podcasts (audio). By creating regular video you are creating a small tv channel just for your brand. Keep the media on your site but also create a YouTube channel. You can interview former clients, discuss relevant insurance news, etc. Brand It with your logo and website. Anyone that embeds your info is now advertising you for free.
4. Social Networking. You can tweet your info and share through Facebook regularly.

A Niche Marketing Strategy
One example of utilizing a niche site would be a home insurance agent that has a site devoted just to flood and hurricane insurance.

Niche Insurance Website FOR SALE: Ready to go!

Why did I use this example? :) Well, it just so happens that I have a niche insurance website ready for the taking. I decided to look for a new owner that would appreciate how important all of these features are so I came here.

My client had to cancel their website for their own reasons. I have full rights to the domain and site that was created. There is not much left to do, in fact it is ready for fine tuning and adding of your own content.

View the site:
If your interested, visit the site at:

www[dot] realfloodinsurance [dot]com

Read more about the features at: www[dot] bit[dot]ly/9GLB1D

I'm selling this site as is for $379. I only want to recoup my time. If you would like a site with the same features but a different design, I can create a similar site ready for your personal touch for only $499.

Contact me through here or the listing page.

Either way, good luck to you all!

The web site needs to be "clean" and easy to navigate. Do a Google search for the type of insurance you want to sell to get ideas on what web sites are there now. Do a screen shots to give your developer ideas on what you like. Rather than a separate web site your developer can create landing pages as a product specific face if you want. You also need to know how you are going to use the site. Is it primarily to generate leads through a search engine or are you using it essentially to make your agency look more professional.

If the former, you need to find a developer who really knows how to optimize your site and to make adjustment every 3-6 months to get you onto the front page of a search.

Talk to Pangea, he designs some pretty good looking sites. Or try trwebwizard, ask for Tanisha, tell her Jason sent you and she'll hook you up.

Check out my sig to see if you like the site...
