Price Gauging

The expensive nature of the ER visit was not what I was alluding to.

The problem is that there is no way for an individual to agree or disagree with the services (and resulting costs) that are provided with the visit.

For example, you don't hire an attorney to perform work without agreeing on a fee first. It just does not happen. Why should utilizing the services of a hospital be any different?

Its almost like an open ended line of credit, where you have no control over what gets tacked on to it.
 
An auto mechanic has a "mechanic's lien" for the cost of repair and does not have to release your vehicle until you cough up the dough. A doctor or hospital cannot hold you hostage for payment of the bill; however, they can turn the bill over to a collection agency that will dun you. Big difference.
