I'm asking this question as a consumer.

Is there a price difference with Progressive if I use an agent or not.

Is online cheaper. Someone told me it is cheaper to go online and not use an agent.

Is this true?

It depends on your state and the driver. Progressive in California has different rates for the direct and independent agents.

Which is cheaper in California then?

I'm in Georgia.

I have Progressive for my motorcycles. My plan was written a few years ago and I went direct. I then gave a BOR to an agent.

I asked about which was less expensive and Progressive told me that each agency has their own rates. I (of course) argued this but they held firm. Now they tell me the opposite.

What they couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me is if going direct is less expensive.

They are an odd company.

Back when I sold motorcycles, I shopped the insurance rates for customers all the time. What I found out back then was that rates were all over the place and had huge fluxuation from year to year.

I would shop your rate EVERY year and I would kick Progressive to the curb just because they try to play both sides of the fence.

I don't know why any agent would represent a company like that.

Yes, Progressive charges less on the online/800 direct side of things than they charge in an Independent office. They are filed as seperate insurance companies.

Shortly before I left my last company I heard that they were filing for a rate increase in my state that would actually make their direct channel more expensive than their independent channel. I don't know if it happened or if it was just a rumor. The only time I sold Progressive was for non-standard auto and occasionally motorcycle, rv or boat. Their preferred auto just wasn't competitive with the other carriers in our agency.

Life insurance is definitely cheaper if you by direct instead of using an agent.

The thread relates to automobile insurance, but are you certain that life insurance is cheaper if you buy direct? I was under the impression that it was same just as health insurance is the same whether purchased direct or through an agent.:skeptical:

He didn't say life insurance was cheaper if you BUY direct, but if you BY direct.

There is a big difference.
