Question...

Hey Dave, I'm calling you because I just started a new position at ABC Mutual where I help families pay off mortgage debt and final expense in case my client dies sooner than expected. I was hoping we could get together for about 10 minutes to show you more specifically what I do. How's Tuesday at 2 sound?"

Here's an idea. Go to Vista Print and buy cards with the yearly calendar on the back. Design the cards to be more a marketing piece then the traditional business card. Skip the address unless you work out of office. Put phone and email with some marketing crap like; Let Me Save You Money On Your Burial Insurance, Life Insurance & Medicare Supplements. I save most people I meet money.

Then when you see those people hand them a card with the calendar facing them. Say here's a handy calendar for you and then flip it around and tell them you would be happy to review their coverage and try to save them some money. Something to try and get a conversation started. If they do start one go for the appointment. Say lets set a time to get together so I can go over this better.

How do you ask a friend , acquaintance, barber, etc., to do business with you?:err:

I do not ask them and I really don't want them as clients. But I do have several. My friends know what I do and they will ask for quotes from time to time. I write them when they ask.

Before I was in this business I always hated the insurance salesmen that would use our friendship or mutual activities to try and sell me insurance.

I vowed I would never be that kind of agent and I haven't been. This goes for family as well. My family knows what I do. If they want insurance they will ask me. I prefer to not have family as clients but I do have some of them as clients. More of my wife's family than my immediate family.

I feel the same way with close friends and family. I got licensed the first time back in the late 70's with Franklin Life or something like that. They had me list like a 100 friends and family that we could attack. I was a sheet metal worker and listed my work buddies. Man were they pissed. After calling on a few from the list I quit and went into commercial financing. Will never solicit them again. If they approach me fine. For life I try to put them with Genworth so I don't even have to ask medical questions.

Now people on the street or barber's and such, fair game.

Look at it this way. If "God Forbid" something happened and they didn't have enough or any coverage how would you feel. If it's Life Insurance let them know you sell it and let it go from there. That way your conscience is clean.

I shied away from writing friends and family for years. Not anymore, if it is a death benefit need and I can fill it I believe I am the best insurance agent they could have. I do not solicit them, after all these years everyone knows what I do.

I'm with you on this for Life but not underage health...premiums too crazy.
They know I care more than any other agent would so I would write them...A paper only. It can get awkward on some of the health questions...be prepared for that.

I think it is Rick, from Topgunproducers who says he will ask his friends and family once and then not bug them again. Then the ball is in their court.
