Just read an article in Consumers Report about robo calls from companies offering to lower interest rates on credit cards. They claim the government just shut down 5 rather large companies, but there are so many others doing the same thing it hardy will make a dent in stopping them.

Anyone ever hear of an insurance agency being "shut down" using robocalls or press 1 leads??? If so, please name them... I'm just curious with all the rumors of "jail time" if this isn't just one of those things that is just feared and exaggerated in our industry. The research that I did confirmed that Press 1 leads became illegal because of people getting screwed on their mortgages and credit cards, and the gov needed a way to close these fraudulent companies.. I find it interesting how the thread starter mentions credit card companies getting shut down... I mean after all, this is the "Final Expense" forum....

This is a pretty clear issue. There are a number of folks that realize the situation for what it is and then another group that just don't care about the laws unless it's proven by some arbitrary standard that there may be consequences for clearly breaking the law.

agentguy, you're missing a point, it was because people were getting harassed. It's not just that they may or may not have been questionable products, it's that it's assaultive marketing.

Yes, companies doing insurance lead generation via this method have been shut down, that's on the FTC site. Yes, agents do get fined for doing it. I'm not aware of the FTC singling out any agents or agencies in particular.

There will always be folks that don't mind breaking the law to make a buck and that's a shame.

Most of us speed while driving everyday. Most of us wont get caught. But for the ones that get a ticket, it sucks.

I would not risk the big fine in breaking the law. Just because a lot of people get away with it, does not mean you should do it.

An insurance agent getting busted by the FCC would make a great story for the local news. I am not interested in risking my reputation, nor my livelihood engaging in illegal marketing practices, or doing business with those that do.

Prior to Sept 2009 I had my own 24 line dialer set up. More than anything, it was the companies selling extended car warranties that drew the most attention. Outside of political and non profit calls, there are no loop holes, robo dialing is illegal.

Rink call to consumers...What is the status on rink calls to businesses? Yes Yes I know but there are many small 1 person shops that have listed business lines.

Of course business to business is still legal. I tried it out Oct. 1 2009 and the response was not plentiful, so I shut my machine down completely.

Once again another post proving who ever designed these auto correct features in "smart" phones should be taken out to the woodshed for a thrashing.
