It looks like I'll have a position offered to me this week or next with a sales manager role for a supplemental insurance company. I'll be functioning as a sales manager I know every company is different but I was curious what I should expect from the pay?

Straight commission.

Does it alarm you at all that they’re calling you a sales manager but you don’t even know how the pay works yet?

It’s all over the place. What kind of supplemental?

Medicare Supplements? Under 65 health supplements ( run if it’s that one. )
Voluntary group supplements? AFLAIC?

If you name the company we could be more helpful. It could be anything. I take it you didn’t start as an agent and work up to a manager position or you would already have an idea of what it will pay.

Not to be negative but since you’re saying you’re hiring on as a manager it’s more than likely a multilevel recruiting company where they basically want you to come on green as a pea but start recruiting your friends to come on under you. If that’s the case, be VERY alarmed. That’s not good. Just drop the question on that they don’t want you to ask...Are YOU going to be responsible for the agents debts if the roll up chargebacks? What that means is you could make $1000 in overrides on an agent but owe $20,000 in his debts that he rolled up to you.

I hope I’m wrong. But if it’s something like that definitely don’t jump into that without really thinking about it.

Its with colonial Life

Years ago I was promoted from a debit agent with Liberty National to a sales manager. Didn't take me long to realize that I made a huge mistake. It was just a title. Instead of working my route in the country I was running 3 open books in Jackson, MS. The district manager handed me a city map and told me to hit the road. Left there in 1991 and have never went back, not even to visit.

Colonial Life is basically a competitor to AFLAIC. It's a legit company. Not likely a great place to new hire as a manager but I could be wrong. I've known a couple of people personally that made good money as AFLAIC agents.
