There is some sound advice here. Its a very long shot. Especially in CA right now and given your experience. you are in for some rough times ahead if you go down this road. Mark the Broker seems to have given the right advice for now.

Does your state recognize " Common Law marriage?? If not, and if the home is in his name only, mortgage is in his name only, and you are not in the Will you might be SOL. Contact an attorney, yesterday.

Hello, I don't know your capabilities, strengths, weaknesses, etc, so keep that in mind as you read this.

I would encourage you to focus on a line of business and start there.

My suggestion is to NOT focus on auto insurance. A lot of people wanting auto insurance quotes seem to be the type of folks who don't even have at least 6 months of coverage without a lapse and/or constantly always late with their payments or their policy lapses. You're perpetually dealing with these customer issues which can wear you out...I'm not talking about how some customers run into financial issues once in a great while, I'm talking about customers who always seem to be late for whatever reason and they aren't going to change, which is sad actually. You'll find yourself chasing your tail with these types of customers.

This still leaves you with other products that you can sell such as renters insurance policies which are probably the easiest to sell...not much underwriting at all. This is not a perfect market either but try to focus your marketing on nicer apartment complexes and neighborhoods if you are able to.

Don't get discouraged if you get rejected by carriers due to your lack of experience, keep calling around, including local/regional carriers and you will get signed-up...they might put a shorter underwriting "leash" on you for about a year, but that should change as you write good risks.

There's a reason why you got into insurance, whether a family member, a friend or somebody that you've known over the years and he/she has been successful. If you can, I would encourage you contact "that person" or find an older, established, successful agent who might be a couple of counties away to be your mentor. Why try to re-establish the wheel when it comes to selling & servicing insurance? Try to build upon what has been successful for your mentor and after you have implemented several of the things that they had done in order to be successful...keep doing that...and try some new things that you have thought about doing.

I wish you well.
