Hello,

What captive company would you work for if starting out in the senior market?

I know Indy is best but I want training first.

I'm looking at bankers, pennlife ...

Any suggestions ... I heard monumental was good but I can't find them in South Texas.

Bankers isn't a bad place to learn but you will have a hard time making money and products aren't competitive. So the advice above is what I would recommend. Stay away!

XRAC, I would disagree. Bankers in our area seems to be a very bad place to learn. Have you ever spoken with an agent who has worked there, or seen what they are doing out in the field? Not good.

I would definitely stay away from Bankers.
 
Why is it assumed that you have to be captive to get training? I understand that most captive certainly have the incintive to train you, but I'm not a 'captive' agency and I train where needed too. I don't offer a start up salary and I don't offer leads, but I offer much better commissions. If you're green and in need of training, I probably won't start you out at the best commission I could give, but you would certainly be aware of that and what/when I will bump you up. I'm aware that I'm the exception to the rule here, and not everyone offers this, but it sure beats captive where when you leave, if you plan on going indy at some point, they keep 'your' clients!! I've played the captive game and I've lost. I've seen many others lose playing that game too, that's why I never suggest someone go captive just for the training. In the age of information technology, even though it may be a little harder on you in the beginning, you can at the very least, most of the training you need. Will it cost you more up front to do it this way, yes, but in the end the rewards are much much greater.

Newby, locally I would stay away from them. I know some of these guys and I guess most of the ones who have succeeded in this market have been pretty slimy if that is what you mean. However, I have known some people who were there who seemed to have learned how to work the telephone and knew the basics of selling that was all I was thinking. Personally I certainly would avoid Bankers knowing what I know.

physicians mutual???? Anyone disagree with this suggestion? They are in my area ... anyone think bankers is better?
 
I'm not making an argument either for, or against, going captive for training. But, one of the things that a good captive company should do for new agents is teach them good insurance work habits. This is a business you must learn, I've seen too many agents being busy and they thought they were being productive. There is no substitute for the camraderie (did I spell that right?) of a local office where you can hear the veteran's war stories, no substitute for an experienced agent mentoring you and drilling it in you that you can do this business.

I know there are many exceptions but of all the agents that I know, the ones who were captive initially got a faster, better start, and are many steps ahead of the agents who had to learn it on their own.
