"The Supreme Court has turned down the first preliminary challenge to President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

The decision Monday to reject an appeal from a former Republican state lawmaker in California was no surprise because a federal appeals court has yet to consider the case. The high court almost never reviews cases before the issues have been aired in lower courts."

Health Care Reform Challenge REJECTED By Supreme Court

Bottom line - has to work through the lower courts first.

I saw that as well. Sounds like a non-event. The Supreme Court wants you to exhaust all options first. Of course, I'm sure someone will try to make more of it than exists.

It's a non-event but I posted it away. It's not the Supreme Court rejecting to hear the case - it's merely them saying they won't hear it until lower courts render a decision.

I think the case has merit. Name one product or service the federal government REQUIRES you to buy.

If this is sustained by the court, what is next?

Everyone must buy a car and it must be a GM car?

Bob, reread the quote. The Supreme Court isn't ruling on the merits of the case. They are merely stating that it isn't time for them to weigh in yet. It hasn't finished making its way through the state and lower federal courts.

Now, if the Supreme Court upholds the mandate, that is a different story.

I think this is just the news playing politics to sell news. The headline grabs you, then you start to read the article and find out it is basically standard operating procedure for the SC. So, it's not news, it's more gossip from the media to get you to look.

I agree with Somarco - there's not a single example of anything you have to buy or any tax you have to pay.

Don't want to pay property taxes? Rent. Car insurance? Don't drive. Don't want to owe federal taxes? Earn under the required pay cap. Don't want to pay sales tax? Buy online.

If you can find someone to let you pitch a tent on their property, you can "live off the land."

This is the first time in our history that all citizens will be required by law to purchase a product.

For the record, sales tax is still due even if you buy online. You just have to send it in yourself!!! Yeah, right, like that really happens!

California has a line on your state tax return for you to claim online purchases and pay your sales tax on them. Good luck with anyone really keeping those records!

Everyone once in a while there will be an article in a MD paper about how the police stopped someone coming back from Delaware (no sales tax) with a bunch of stuff. Apparently it's illegal in MD to drive to Delaware for the specific reason to buy stuff in order to avoid the MD sales tax.

A number of states are getting more aggressive about this. If they can find anything to suggest the company has a presence in their state, then they require the company to collect the tax. In fact, I can't think of many online retailers that don't collect the tax for your state.
