The X Banker

For things like start up cost, furniture expenses etc....

My dilemma is that I have the educational background, business experience, product knowledge, talent and the drive to become successful, but no money...... LOL! I'm in a really compromising position I guess.

Start by working out of your house. Is that feasible for you?

It is, I'm just kinda nervous about working from home.. don't know if I really have that type of discipline... I am so use to leaving home going to an office bldg.

But it really would make sense!

Is that how you started?

I worked out of a brick & mortar office pretty much from the start, but now I am in a home office. I make more money, have less expenses and work when I want to work at home. I go to peoples homes for appts. It does take self discipline I suppose, but when you are starting you should be plenty motivated.

I am very motivated, just the thought of making higher commisions and having your own book of business is enough to make me work from home. But I'm still nervous b/c I've never done it before.

How did you approach your finances? meaning did you save money or did you just pay up your bills for a few months? Or both?

Being an X banker myself, you will not be able to borrow money as a business unless you have money. Even SBA loans require a principal investment and some kind of feasible cash flows.

I'd estimate that, to start an insurance business with only limited stress and financial hardship, you need about $40,000 for business and personal expenses in the first 6 months for an average middle class person. That's just my opinion. And, it can be done with less. But, you need to judge your perseverance if you have less.

The self-discipline I had to have was to not work every night until midnight. I spent the days pounding the phone and seeing clients and did all the paperwork and mailings in the evening.

Good advice!

From what I understand, getting a loan nowadays requires a real business plan, something I view as a good thing.

A business plan would give you projections on what you are looking at spending and what you'll earn (and how).

Starting out in this business with little to no money is manageable, but probably the most difficult way. If you can get setup with advances (depends on what type of insurance you sell and where), you can pretty much write your own loan, in a poor mans style.
