Thinking About Getting into Med Sup Sales

I just closed up my mortgage business and need something to do. I'm thinking seriously about getting into Medicare supplement sales. Where do I start? I'm going to be 70 in September.

My first sale would be on myself. Then hit up your friends and tell them how good your med supp agent is........LOL

I hope this helps............

I need more basic help that that. Like, ....should I get licensed before getting a job, or should I get a job before getting the license, or can I get a license and then start selling for anyone I want to sell for. Can I sell med sup for as many companies as I want to. Who are the best companies to sell for? Which companies do I want to avoid. Basic stuff.

I was asked this buy a guy not long ago.

"I wouldn't", was my answer.

TN might be different, but in MO most of the real competitive carriers are around the 10% commission level with one or two that are "close" paying around the 20-23% range. With the new regulations next year the commissions may or may not be under the new rules.( I can't find them now, but they reduce what we will earn per sale).

Good luck.

Remember, you will be self employed. It is not a job.

Moonlight laid it out about as plain as it can be. Selling Medicare is a bigger responsibility than most people make it out to be. The most important insurance a post 65 year old has is their health insurance, so become a product expert and know what you are doing.

Once you are licensed you will want to find a Marketing Company to associate with for your different insurance carriers. There are many of them and you can find some good advice here about the good, bad and ugly ones.

Good luck. It is a perfect 'job' for a 70 year old. ;)

#1-Get licensed.

#2-Formulate a marketing plan.

#3-Research MedSupp carriers to find the most competitive in your area at medicare.gov.

#4-Have at it.

Bon chance!

Make sure you take on a few carriers. Without choice, your prospects will look elsewhere. Clients really do shop around for their supp coverage.

Yep.

So if you get greedy and write them that supp for $125 where you make 23% commission instead of that $110 supp where you make 12%... they will find and move to that $110 supp and you get 0% of nothing.

I can't tell you how many dozens of supps I've over written when another agent before me, with the same portfolio of products, writes them the higher commission product instead of the better priced product.
