Uninsured Motorist Coverage Question

My life is not worth riding a motorcycle when some *** in a car sideswipes me. UM coverage may be cheap on a auto, are you talking about $30 per month on the motorcycle policy? It's not very cheap here in Florida.
It's on my truck, but it doesn't make a difference here. I have it on my truck because that's the vehicle I pay the lowest rates on and I was required to raise my liability to 500/500/100 to carry that much UM. I have 250/500/100 on all my other vehicles because I have an umbrella. But the UM premium is the same no matter which vehicle I put it on and that UM would apply to a motorcycle. I sold my bike about 2 years ago after a car wreck. I can't ride anymore because of it. But my UM paid out in that car wreck and I wasn't driving a car I even owned.

I don't know the laws in Oklahoma, but if the car owner carried UM, then that's where it might have come from.

It doesn't make actuary sense for that to crossover to a motorcycle. It doesn't make sense to me that people who don't drive motorcycles have to pay higher UM rates because it covers anyone who might ride a motorcycle.

I'll see if there is any information on it.

Wait I went back and read the conversation again.

Your UM can go with you from car to car. The OP is talking about from car to motorcycle. In Florida, that can't be done and I suspect in most states it's the same way.

UM on a motorcycle is outrageously priced. That is why I figured the OP was here asking his/her question.

I was under the impression my UM on my car would cover me when I was on my motorcycle when I had it. I'll ask my agent and chime back in when I get an answer. It doesn't matter now that it's sold, but I'd be mad if I wasn't covered especially since it's an accident that caused me to not be able to ride and an accident where I got a good sized UM settlement.

So I confirmed UM on your car will apply to your motorcycle. I'm not sure if it's an Oklahoma thing that it will apply or a Florida thing that it won't.

Yeah, how UM works varies by state. In CA, you actually have to buy it on the vehicle that you want it on. A car UM would never apply to a motorcycle or even another car.

This is why its important to know the state when answering questions in a lot of coverages.

Totally agree djs.

Bottom line: Make sure your insureds carry equal limits on their UM/UIM with all licensed units in the household. Your not doing them a favor by allowing them to carry lower or none on mcyc then their auto.....and that goes for jet skis, snowmobiles, all licensed toys. IMHO

Or, am in the minority of this opinion?

I still can't grasp that auto UM would transfer to motorcycle accidents. It doesn't make sense to me. You should if you can afford it. I guess you have to pay to play.
