Tons and tons of original content and even more backlinks from relevant sites.

I would sit down and really consider who your ultimate client is, what they do for a living, where they live, what their challenge is, and how you solve that problem. Then as @tahoeray suggested write "tons and tons of original content" to solve that problem for your client. Add in " backlinks from relevant sites" and in addition consider the location of your clients. One of the last major components that few discuss is time..... and aged, constantly updated site, is like a fine wine, hard to beat and gets better every year.
