What Do You Think Will Happen to the Big PFFS Companies

We want you to know that Aetna remains committed to our Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and prescription drug (PDP) business. We are proud of the success you have helped us achieve in 2009.
In support of our strategy to move to network-based HMO and PPO products, Aetna will discontinue broker sales and marketing of individual Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Medicare Advantage products effective August 1, 2009. Applications received with an effective date of August 1, 2009 or later will not be compensated by Aetna.

Agreed. I have seen in writing from the companies themselves that Coventry will dropping out of the PFFS and MSA market 1/1/10, but will still have their CCP and PDP available. With the exception of VA were they have pulled everything. Wellcare is dropping out of the PFFS as of 1/1/10. And Aetna has stopped accepting new business on the PFFS side to be paid commission on as of yesterday 6/30/09 and will be pulling their PFFS as of 1/1/10, but will continue to have they HMO, PPO and PDP plans available.

Agree with pretty much everything said here. Add it all up, and you'll see the big players staying in the game via HMO and PPO, and probably gobbling up many of the smaller players along the way.

Seniors will be choosing between HMO/PPO (probably with somewhat deteriorating benefits) and Medicare Supplements well into the future. Nice to have choices.

Last summer I met with a hospital administrator about Coventry. His response was that they just signed a contract with Coventry two weeks before. My point is this – Coventry despite its' issues – isn't going away! They have been contracting in some of my PFFS counties. Sure, some counties will go. But, don't count them out just yet. :1baffled:

Guess I wasn't clear... HMO's and PPO's will be replacing the PFFS plans for 2010.

Carriers who already have their provider networks in place, will replace their PFFS with HMO's and PPO's.

Played golf today with my Aetna RSM. It wasn't even close. I kicked his ass.

However, on the 13th tee he casually mentioned that Aetna was no longer accepting PFFS applications for 8/1 and beyond.

I asked if that means they're history for 2010. He said there was no decision on that. My guess is that the decision has obviously been made.

Rick
