Why Do Insurance Agents Ask if You Are Currently Insured?

Why lie? Either you have it or you don't. Lie and get caught and the company will deny the claim. That's outright stupid.

Companies ask for this information to find out if you have insurance experience and actively driving a vehicle recently.

Let's not be so stupid here. Yes, companies can be hideous and low but the request for prior insurance is not anything new and most agents with any experience will know that this is a prequisite to get into a lower tier or preferred company.

Lying won't do you any good. They can look up your current policy even if you haven't had any claims. If you don't have insurance now the best thing to do is find an independent agent that specializes in high risk (that's you) and they can find you a cheap policy. After you make your payments on time for a year you can start looking at some of the standard insurance carriers and your rates will drop a little. Then if you don't have any accidents/tickets and you pay on time for 2 more years you will start to qualify for the preferred companies which offer even lower rates.

Actually, if you ask a company actuary who do the pricing, this is a variable in their GLM model. Sometimes, they even get a different underwriting class based on the company. For example, if a client is currently with GEICO, the quoting will ask which subsidary from GEICO, the casualty company (non-standard) or the preferred government employee insurance company.

Insurance agents/companies will ask about prior insurance because if you have been driving without insurance, you are considered a higher risk. Higher risks get charged more. If you lie and say you had insurance, the agent/company can require proof of prior insurance before they submit your app and/or bind coverage. I know some companies won't insure you if you've been without insurance for over 30 days. Obviously if you didn't own a car which is why there's no insurance, that doesn't count.

Also, if you've been driving without insurance for too long, the state may have suspended your drivers license, so you may want to double check your license is still valid.

Agree with this.

Well they also may want to know so that they can help you cancel your existing policy if you are switching to their insurance services. They also want to get an accurate customer profile of all their clients, and this is just routine information that they need to gather.
