Would He Be Successful?

I have a buddy at church, he's the youth pastor actually, and he's interested in selling life insurance. He's sold TruGreen in the past door to door, roofs after hail storms and did telemarketing for a few years.

He's also Puerto Rican and speaks fluent Spanish. But his only day off is Mondays.

He asked me today if he could work all day Mondays and maybe one more evening and sell 2-3 policies a week.

I told him I would talk to some people (that would be you guys) and get back to him.

Honestly with him being Hispanic, I think he could drop mail to just other Hispanics and make a killing. Get 20 leads a week and fill up a Monday.

What do you guys think?

I think he could avg 2 week yes, but with proper training & decent lead prices. He has a short window, he doesnt need 20 leads/wk. Order 10, try that for a month & see how it goes. He will have trouble getting appt only on mondays....so I would only door knock.

Well that's why I thought he should shoot for 20 so he could fill his day with appts. He could/would still DK when he didnt have appts. And he said he could work one other evening a week.

Well 20/week at say $25/ea is $500....IF he does sell 2/week, after leads, gas, printing/stationery supplies & misc expenses he doesnt have much left. And thats IF he sells 2/week. Ppl in this industry full time get 20/week. I wouldnt recommend someone spend $500/week working 1 day + 1 evening.

Get 10, do that for a month....re-evaluate & go from there.

Yeah I did the math for him. I told him if he sold only 2 policies a week he would only make $300 or so for the first 9 months and he sounded super happy.

An idea for him would be to subscribe to inforee or buy a list from Josh. Print out a copy of any lead card and photo copy it (100x) make up a little bio with a pic of him and his family and then get one of the youth to door deliver 100 a week and pay the kid. Then door knock all those you delivered week one and see how it goes.

The odds are against him since about 90% of agents that are trying to do this fulltime don't make it. Probably even a higher failure rate for the part timers.

But, one in ten does make it. maybe he will be the one?

If anyone could figure out who that 1 in 10 is in advance then we wouldn't have all the BS marketers trying to find that needle in a haystack.

With the right training, and work ethic he has a shot. Part time is tough, but as long as he doesn't bury himself in lead costs, it is worth a shot.

Intestinal fortitude is impossible to measure.

It's the reason some first round NFL picks are total busts (Ryan Leaf comes to mind), and some undrafted, unwanted free agents (HOF'er Johnny Unitas comes to mind) are wildly successful.

You can't predict.

I think he can do it. The question is is he disciplined enough to do it?
