We did it back in the 90s because we didn't have any advertising money, back in the day when NASE was all over N. Georgia. It worked for us until we were able to buy "real" advertising. I hated doing it really because signs llook trashy in an intersection, but we didn't overdo it, and we put our company name on it so we didn't look like we were hiding anything. Until Cobb County took us to court and fined us, oops! That was when Sonny Perdue had signs plastered all over every telephone pole in the state, but who said life is fair? Anyway, fortunately we were able to do other methods of advertising as we built up a book at that point. I was amazed at how many legit calls we got. A lot of the calls started with "I normally don't call off of a sign but your rates looked good...". It was when Unicare was in Georgia. I wouldn't want to do it now for 2 reasons: 1) they are ugly, and 2) most counties have cracked down on them. I understand why people do it though, it can be tough getting your name out there so people know you exist. That is any business, not just insurance. Now with the internet I don't think they work as much now either. But you never know.
I don't see a road or yard sign as any worse or better then a cold call like a telemarketer, door knocking like a door to door brush salesman, direct/junk mail or a "as seen on tv" ad.
Or advertising in the signature of your forum posts. hehe
Chris Westfall in Florida claims to be having tremendous success doing this...Whether that's the truth or not, I don't know...I think it would appeal to some people, but probably turn other people off...I want my clients to hold me in the same regards as their accountants, doctors, and Lawyers...And I personally wouldn't take my taxes, or go visit a doctor, if I saw a sign stuck in someone's yard
My buddy used them a lot to build his Herbalife business back in the day before the internet and probably still would figuring people would be driving on their way to work or home and basically be over their job and looking for something else.
I don't see it working very well with insurance myself. Perhaps if you had a sign positioned while leaving a Wallgreens pharmacy or something like that but I think anything else would be futile.
in nj you better put a throw away number on them....because they will fine you. after an election you, have a few days to pick up your signs, or they will fine the politician.
