5-Sins of a New Final Expense Agent

5. Over-thinking everything.- this is a simple business. You can learn everything you need to know by reading this forum, selecting and upline (mentor) and jump out of the nest. Will you screw some things up and blow some opportunities? Sure. But that's how we all learned.

One of the challenges I face, from having websites that rank for a couple of niches that opportunity seekers are looking for quite often, is the habitual opportunity seeker. This person is constantly looking for a new opportunity/get rich idea/magic pill solution that, this time, won't require work and won't require effort but will make $1 million per month with 5 minute's work.

I know that list companies sell "Opportunity Seekers" lists to various enterprises. It just seems like this group calls one FMO, then another, then another in hopes of finding the ratio of 0 agent and 100% effort on the FMO side.

I suppose this is why the free lead deals continue to entice agents but more often than not lead to these agencies finding that the agents not willing to invest in themselves are the same ones not willing to invest their time in working it.

If you give your kid a car, they may or may not appreciate it to the point where they'll maintain it, clean it constantly, and meticulously watch out for dings, trash, bad kids riding in it. Contrast this to the kid who went out and worked all summer long in the heat, mowing lawns, and worked at night, too, during the school year to save up enough money for that car. Who do you think would take better care of that first car?

It's the same with the agents that bounce from one opportunity to another, I believe. Those that are merely looking for another shop because they did nothing, themselves, at the old one are often searching for another excuse as to why it didn't work for them.

Agents, however, that have the best work ethic around and just need the right fit opportunity, are good as gold and just as rare.
It is the wanted, desired, appreciated, and welcome agent who will take a marketing system or niche that fits their personality and interest, add diligent self-study where necessary to create their own action steps within it and take bold action.

"You can have excuses or you can have results, but you can't have both." -Dani Johnson once rightly opined.

I am completing my third month selling FE. At times I question whether I need more intense, hands-on, training as Reardon described. To date, I have received about 160 leads from weekly mailings. From past threads, the target number should be around 40 completed apps from that amount of leads. I will not make it. But my question is, as a newbie, what would be an acceptable app goal that would show I am on the right track? And, what number of apps would indicate I need more hand-holding? Thanks for your feedback.

160 leads in 12 wks... = appx 13 leads per week; not enough leads for the avg newbie. In order to give you meaningful feedback one would need to know how many (quality) sits you are getting out of these leads? Obviously if you were even getting 50% sits, or 6.5 per wk, you aren't likely to close 60% of these as a newbie, which is about what you would need to be closing in order to obtain the 40 apps thus far. Can you supplement your DM leads with door knocking or other lead generation?

A phenomonen: High activity level = high application count; low activity level = low appl count. High activity level even with bad technique can = success.

Excellent advice Newby and confirmed my thoughts so far. Although I'm not new to insurance I haven't sold for most of my healthcare career, mainly been in operations for managed care plans. But due to "position elimination" I am now facing starting a new career at the age of 60 and I'm not going back to the corporate world(wouldn't get hired anyway at my age).

I know it will be a struggle, enrolled 30 clients during AEP with Humana and Healthspring and am now focusing on FE. I want to keep it simple and I believe FE is the answer for me right now.

I'm so glad I found this forum and appreciate all the advice and guidance from you guys.
