Admin Said to Be Eyeing Insurance Extension

These plans will die out if extended due to the double digit rate increases they will experience.

I don't understand, why would my 50 year old female in Tampa now paying $249 per month for Blue Options Plan 533 switch to a Silver plan @ $385 if her $249 went up double digits, let's say $285? That is a 14% increase and much more than Blue usually bumps these.

It isn't as if ACA rates aren't going to go up every year as well.

I don't think there is any way clients will switch out of these plans as long as they are offered, it is easier to just go to a higher deductible (Plan 534 or then 535) to avoid the much higher ACA plan rates.

This is a paradigm shift for health insurance-In the past the people who have switched plans to take advantage of lower rates on new plans have been healthy, that path has now been permanently eliminated. The new path will be people who are healthy and have minimal claims will stay on their plans and insurance companies are going to see their profit margins increase on these plans because of that.

People with ongoing health issues will want the new plans with low deductibles and in many cases lower rates and switch, leaving a community of health individuals on the old plans.

FLM I like your analysis here but is this ^part a typo? Did you mean sick people will switch to the lower deductible more expensive ACA plan?

This really is a trip because the older blocks of biz normally get sicker and more expensive but in our new world they get cheaper and healthier.

no typo, 'ongoing health issues'='sick' :1laugh:

The horse is out of the barn. Insurers have transitioned people off these plans already, if they haven't cancelled them entirely and left the state. If you gave all of my clients a do over and let them keep their old plan, probably 80% would take you up on it, but how would you facilitate it? Would be a nightmare on all levels trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Yes but its not like the nightmare effects the government unless it interfears with an election.

Are most pre2014 plan outofpockets greater than 6000 dollars or less than 6000 dollars?

The plans offered by BCBS now are much worse than the ones pre-ACA. And more expensive, but that was going to happen with GI, regardless.

The pre-2014 plans will eventually become more expensive but it will take them a long time to catch up with 2014 (and 2015) rates. If we get a 3 yr extension to 2016 that is nice. I must say this was not unexpected. Obama just makes this crap up as he goes. Doesn't matter if he is rewriting a law on the books (including his own) or rewriting the Constitution.

You think the administration would realize they need those healthy people on the 2013 plans to transition over to ACA plans at the end of 2014. They are making it worse if those plans are allowed to exist...

Nothing DC does makes sense from a business perspective. No reason to expect them to understand the ramifications of extending 2013 designs.

This is the same administration that claims unemployment and food stamps create jobs and drive the economy. They also believe increasing the minimum wage to $10 will stimulate the economy.
