Interesting reactions. On the jack of all trades argument, I will say that it depends on the individual. I know, and have met, a lot of Agents that are excellent at providing both P&C and Health Insurance to their clients. So, it can be done.
Again, if I look at the Brokers in my area that are doing well, they are all multi-line independent agencies. These are the ones with the brick buildings and big signage out front....
A disclaimer: Perhaps I did not find my personal integration of P&C to be as difficult as mentioned above because I just sell to small and medium sized businesses...so the conversation easily transitions from Group Health to Workers Comp and BOP. If a large part of my book was individual health...I guess I could see the reluctance.
Point being: It can be done. Takes some time to study and license...and some extra cash the first year to cover extra E&O, but that goes down the second year you have your license. Its just an investment in your business.
