A fellow agent in NC has advised me that BCBSNC will stop writing family plans. Instead, they will issue individual policies. He indicated they are also laying off 80+ people in home office.

Common ownership?

Looks to be a separate company:

When you hear "BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina," you'll see people nodding in recognition. Most everyone knows who we are. As the only South Carolina-owned and operated health insurance carrier, we have been offering security to Palmetto State citizens for more than 60 years.

BCBSGA has filed for new plans to be effective 9/23/10 but they are not saying what the new plans will look like.

Same with Anthem Blue Cross CA. Blue Shield CA is taking a different approach and will re-design plans on the next IFP portfolio renewal 1/1/11. Just in time for MLR

Is this all so they won't have to cover "dependents" under an adult's policy?

If so, I can't wait until Obama/Sebelius get wind of this charade!

Will this mean that ALL kids are going to be on separate policies? Are insurers going to be able to discriminate between healthy/insurable kids and uninsurable ones? Will they all be charged the same rates? If so, kid rates will go through the roof.

WoW! Just when you thought you had heard it all.

Are insurers going to be able to discriminate between healthy/insurable kids and uninsurable ones?

You know I hate this word---"discriminate".

Insurers (just like agents) are in this business to make money.

If they don't want to insure kids on a GI basis, it's they're prerogative to level the playing field.

Just like you and I have the right to pass on any potential client we like, right?

Carriers have a right to protect their block, and policyholders. Tier rating, block underwriting, aging blocks all are ways to balance risks.

AFAIK, all states require carriers to participate in HIPAA plans which are clear money losers. HIPAA plans are segregated internally for rating purposes even if the state mandates rates that can be charged.

Segregating children into a special block is one way to track and set rates.

If Obama and Sebelius have a problem with this that is too bad. They created this mess, they will have to live with it.
