Captive Agent vs Independent

I renewed my Life License after a lapse of few years. I have talked to NY Life, Mass Mutual (GA) and have been offered a captive broker position (no salary but commissions with some add ons). Some of my potential clients want a Penn Mutual policy. I am wondering if I can be part of NY Life and also become a Penn Mutual independent broker to cater to my client or do I not take up NY Life
Not sure since NY Life or Mass Mutual are currently recruiting me as a broker and not as an employee.
Confused - any help/clarification will help

Ask them directly if you are able to solicit for other companies as well. Then you'll know for sure if you would be independent or captive with them.

I knew someone 6 or 7 years ago with Mass, they could sell outside of Mass. Like Todd said, you'll have to ask.

Thanks! On asking I was told that I can sell for other companies but doing it with them I will earn brownie points toward becoming a captive agent in future and get benefits etc.
