Career Decision Help!!!

Jesus....who the Hell is making any money selling Car insurance?

No Really, is the agency making any $ dong this?

My staff says the same thing and I say I will pay you more but when the monthly commission is lower you can take a paycut just like i do. The commissions as an owner are never consistent and as the owner when the monthly renewals are low and the owner is forced to eat ramen that month. Payroll taxes, unemployment, e&o coverage, benefits, they talk a lot out of an agency revenue. I have paid my mortgage past the 30 day mark for payroll to be loyal to my employees and not just lay one off. If you always feel everyday you can do better than you should look around. If you are a good producer anyone will hire you

Just to clear some things up. Let's not assume I can't produce and close on leads. I'm not the low man on the totem pole that other agent's CSRs may be. I wasn't groomed to be a CSR. I quote and sell policies, am at any point up to date on 6-7 companies underwriting guidelines, and service the clients policies as well. We do not have any support staff.

Our clientele is such that I am seemingly servicing their policies all of the time. Basically we get channeled non-standard risks without prior insurance from his dad's Allstate agency. They aren't the best risks for selling a policy to and barely hearing from again.

I understand what it takes to run an agency. I've been sitting 10 feet away from my friend/boss for the past 6 years. I know about the upkeep. Our office is 200 sqft and has 4 desks.

His plan is to solicit other Allstate agents for their non-qualifying business, but we barely hear from the other 2 Allstate's that he is close friends with. Now apparently, Allstate's non-standard product is relaxing their underwriting so that their non-qualifying prospects are qualifying thus drying up leads to our office and I know the pressure Allstate corporate puts on its agents to write business.

I know what my options are, but I was hoping for some insight on how other agents pay their employees so I can proposition my friend/boss for an alternate payment structure/arrangment.

I'd rather stay working for him and give him the opportunity to keep a longtime trusted employee rather than have to replace me with some *** he doesn't know or really have the time to train.

I know auto insurance isn't the big money-maker. I know commercial is where it's at. That's something I can explore but not while still working for my friend. I can entertain the idea of a life and annuities license if there's more money in that over auto and home, but my friend likes to micromanage everything and will not see a benefit to himself.

We have consistently grown through all of the fraud just not as fast as we were before the fraud. We hemorrhaged policies but we managed to write more than we hemorrhaged.

I'm just curious about what other systems are out there besides the one my agent runs.

I get no bonuses and am often fighting over the 2-3 leads that come in on average per day between the other producer even though I'm prospecting and he's on Facebook/Reddit.

I had to fight with my agent over $50 one of our companies sales reps presented to me for writing a motorcycle policy through them during a promotional period. He doesn't want us to be incentivized to push business to a certain carrier but he's ok with making sure I push business to our higher commission companies if they're competitive with no extra incentive for me. Hypocrite.

He's a very cheap person and I know that handing that $50 over to me was very hard for him to do even though I know it's his to do with as he pleases, but frankly I'm getting tired of it. I'm not here to cry about it as I know I can go out there and find something else. I just want to get info on other compensation systems to present to him before seeking employment elsewhere. I've only ever known one system and this was the first place I could think of to ask that question.

That's the kind of input/suggestions I'm looking for.

I've only ever worked in one system and I'm not familiar with other compensation systems. I'm only now learning. The only system my friend knows is the one his dad ran for many years. The only other one he knows is 100% commission, no hourly. The always put me off a little. I'd be willing to consider it, if I didn't have to do any service work but we're a small office and it would not work very well if I didn't do any service. I have to revolutionize his agency if I'm going to stay there. Making $30K a year with 6 years experience isn't cutting it.

You got that right! If you are a "top producer" then that doesn't cut it. Most secretaries make 30k.
