small town politics and personalities can be quite challenging, but.....

if you are "the face" of 13 years, would you have enough support outside your agent's "set" or "clique" to set up on your own with different carriers? That would certainly give you the freedom to do some of the other marketing you have mentioned. You would have to face both naysayers and supporters but if the agent is truly retiring, removing himself from the scene of selling insurance, and that is known in the community, you might have a small town strategic opening which you could exploit.

I'm sure you've seen them because they are current, but I think these two threads give a good group of general cautions to inform "plan laying":

I have the feeling the OP works for a captive agent and for whatever reason is not eligible to become an agent with that company. Could be wrong, just how it came across to me in the first post.

My guess is State Farm or similar.
