Does having a salvage title on the car make DMV registration cheaper?

Someone crashed into me and I got my car repaired, but the damages were at the 80% car value mark so it turned my car into a salvage vehicle. I read that the dmv registration fee for that is $45. My registration before this accident was $300 per year. Does that mean my annual DMV registration just got cheaper?

Was the "registration" actually registration plus taxes? Was it the taxes that actually went down since now the car is valued less?

Check with your state. It could be because the vehicle has no real 'value'. I probably can't be insured with full coverage since it has been totaled and can now only carry liability to protect the person you hit. You may not be able to sell it but can continue to drive it until it dies. Some states only allow a salvage vehicle to be on the road for a set period of time and some insurers will only allow the vehicle to be insured for a set period of renewals

Having a salvage title on a car does not usually make DMV registration cheaper. In fact, it can sometimes make it more complicated. A salvage title means the car was declared a total loss by an insurance company due to damage or theft. This can raise some red flags with the DMV. They might require extra inspections to make sure the car is safe to drive, which can cost additional money. The registration fee itself might not change, but the overall cost can be higher because of these extra steps. I would recommend checking with your local DMV or a reliable source like dmvlist.com for specific details in your area. They can give you a clear idea of what to expect and any extra costs involved. It's important to understand the process fully before buying a salvage vehicle to avoid any surprises.

not all total losses get a salvage title. in Michigan, I believe only most recent 6 year manufactured model years get a salvage title if totalled. If older than 6 model years, it doesnt get a salvage title.
