Google Algorithms

I read somewhere the thing that Google uses to complete search phrases is interfering with long tail search terms

Yep!

Plus the maps and places listing are pushing down the "regular" rankings.

You can have a "number one" ranking and be listed eleventh after the paid listings and the maps 7 box.

You can be number one and be below the fold!!! Wha' sup with that?

I'm trying to get into the 7 box, but I don't know if I can without a using physical address.

I work out of my home. I don't want people driving up to the house and asking me questions about deductibles when I'm trying to watch Sponge Bob.

I have a local/places high listing because of the posting age, but never had someone came to my house. They have mapped out the way to get there, but never come..only get calls and leads from it..

Maybe I will try going after the 7 box. I've gotta check with the wife and the cat first. They are both concerned about their privacy.

Fortunately that site ranks for over 1000 phrases and not all of them are in considered local by Google, at least not yet.

But the advice that we've all heard about adding a geo qualifier to keywords just goes in the toilet now.

Remember way back when when we told people not to try to rank for "health insurance" Try to rank for "your state" + "health insurance?"

And Yahoo! and Bing will probably copy Google if this proves to be a money making strategy for Google.

And it probably will be. You know that Google has done its research.

In fact is probably is a brilliant strategy for Google.

Unless the average searcher doesn't want to see the maps and places. Giving irrelevant results is what turned Ask.com (AskJeeves.com) into a non contender.

They tried to over monetize and let their PPC ads push the organic listings below the fold.

I think that Google has done their homework and have determined that this is what people want.

SEOs will have to adjust. I hope that I'm able to adjust my strategy so that it isn't my income that gets adjusted.

Go for it, you may be missing out on some valuable local city leads..Most SEO seminars I go to now push local SEO marketing, and its working pushing some of these lead generating companies off the map box because they are not local. Its feels good to have a number one ranks for a big city keyword phrases. I had a advertising company call me trying to get me to buy a "real estate domain" with a PR of 15 for health insurance charlotte.com. So while on the phone with the rep. I changed my title and appeared in the top 5 in the map box...lol I told the rep thanks you saved me $4,200 a year. She almost dropped the phone, and couldnt say much after that. They ended up letting me have the domain real estate for free for a year. So yes SEOer's will have to adjust, but I don't believe they will have a physical address in every city..

I'm thinking Google's acquisition of groupon will bring on further refinements to their local search. They'll get a ton of information on local businesses from Groupon's sales contacts that you know will be fed right into the database.
