HealthPartners announced Tuesday that it will no longer be part of UnitedHealthcare's Medicare Advantage network starting next year.

The nonprofit healthcare organization says it made the decision because "UnitedHealthcare delays and denies approval of payment for our patients' Medicare Advantage claims at a rate unlike any other insurer in our market."

HealthParnters claims its denial rate with UnitedHealthcare has been up to 10 times higher than that of other insurers it works with.

"Unfortunately, some of UnitedHealthcare's practices create unnecessary waits and delays for patients, and they interfere with our ability to provide patients with timely and appropriate care," HealthPartners said in a statement.

The Star Tribune is a liberal media outlet. They blame big business for all problems. UHC's agent release indicates they are in contract negoications....as in rate of payment. Who is reporting the truth?

HealthPartners in negotiations with UnitedHealthcare

UnitedHealthcare and HealthPartners, Minnesota and Western Wisconsin are engaged in negotiations to renew the contract for members enrolled in UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage (MA) plans and Dual Special Needs Plans (D-SNP). For now, nothing changes. Medicare Advantage members continue to have network access to HealthPartners’ hospitals, facilities and its physicians through Dec. 31, 2024

It remains our top priority to reach an agreement. We are committed to utilizing the several months remaining on our contract to engage in good-faith negotiation with the goal of renewing our relationship and ensuring our Medicare Advantage members long-term access to HealthPartners. Unfortunately, rather than joining us at the negotiating table and engaging in productive discussions, HealthPartners has chosen to put our Medicare Advantage members in the middle of our negotiation, creating unnecessary stress and anxiety for them and their families.

UnitedHealthcare remains committed to providing a broad network of providers. On average, we negotiate thousands of provider contracts every year and the vast majority result in renewed contracts. Our top priority is to renew our relationship with Health Partners without disruption to care for our members.

What you need to know
  • We urge HealthPartners to join us at the negotiating table and do what’s in the best interests of Minnesotans by reaching an agreement that ensures access to quality, affordable care
  • If an agreement is not reached, HealthPartners will be out-of-network effective Jan. 1, 2025

It is consistent with the feedback I have received from providers recently. Prior to this year, UHC was pretty great, however, this year providers tell me they have to fight with UHC just to get nickel and dimed. They say it adds up, and it’s just not worth it. Providers who are in network will encourage patients to get coverage from other advantage plans, telling them they are no longer in network, even though they are.
