I figured that people that didn't want to answer wouldn't. The reason I was wondering is because I'm new and am throwing around the idea if it would be worth buying leads for the first time. I'm trying to see if there's a pattern.

Here's the reason I asked what I asked....
What do you sell? (I want to see if your experience could apply to my situation which is life, annuities, disability, health....but mainly life and annuities)
How much do you make per year? (can be a range) - I want to see if people that are using leads are the really experienced, highly paid producers or if this seems to be a supplement or something to get started, etc.
Do you use paid leads? (If highly paid people use very few paid leads or a ton of leads will let me know which direction to take)
How much of your business is from paid leads? Again, is it a supplement to your business, or not.
I didn't think I was offending anyone by asking, but feel free not to answer if you're personally offended. I really would appreciate it if enough people would where I can make an informed decision on lead buying to build my business. Sometimes it seems hard to find answers on this from people that don't have skin in the game...ie., selling leads.
Good luck on getting your answers. I've had the same problems, I never did ask about how much was made, I figured it was none of my business. It seems like everyone is tight lipped about the lead ratio, and what type they use.Unless like you say they have a skin in the game. It almost seems like nobody wants competition from new agents.
Funny thing about buying leads.... they don't work the same for any 2 people. Of course, I assume you are primarily asking about internet leads (as opposed to mailer leads, telemarketed leads, etc).
My experience is a few years ago, you could do pretty well in almost any line of business with internet leads. Once people found out these were working, especially in larger metropolitan areas, they became oversaturated with agents buying them, which caused lead companies to try to fill the orders, at a cost of quality. An example of this is they would incentivise individuals to make requests, so there was no real need for the product when the agent attempted to call.
Lead companies also started sharing leads in a big way, so you would end up getting the same lead from several sources. This allows them to make sure leads are sold a maximum number of times to various agents. This is good for the lead company, not so good for the client or the agent trying to sell to the lead.
I think most would agree that the last 6 months or so has been pretty poor for internet leads. Sure, you got the occassional gold nugget, but you had to do a lot of panning for it.
I still don't do a lot of internet leads. I've chosen to focus my time elsewhere. But, I have noticed the last month or so the leads have a different feel. It could be a fluke since I don't have enough to really tell, could be the stage of the moon, but they seem to be a bit better than they had been for the recent past.
My advice is to try them, being careful on how much you spend, but to give it enough of a try to be honest with it. See if it works for you. On a bad day, you should be able to break even, hopefully have a good day and turn a decent profit. The trick is to be on top of the leads, monitor them, make sure they meet your criteria for a return or turn them off.
There is plenty of information about internet leads on this site. Use the search function. You will find feedback on almost every lead vendor.
You will also notice that quite a few of us have warned about the changes that have occurred (at least in health leads) over the last few months. Dan's post hits the nail on the head.
If I were starting out today, I don't think I would put a lot of stock in internet leads. At one time you could make a good living working internet leads. Right now that remark is questionable at best.
I'm not to the point where I care where the leads "could" come from. I'm still deciding if that's even something I want to pursue. Hence, the questions above. Again, I would appreciate anyone willing to answer even SOME of the questions. By all means don't answer anything you don't feel comfortable with.
