I really should be working

Anthony Bourdain said: "Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o'clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you've never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyways. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride."

Goals!

Work, it's a topic my partner and I often talk about and reflect on. We both take a lot of time off. He started "working from home" even before the pandemic. He also cut back on hours due to a medical condition (nothing degenerative or life threatening thankfully). He now has an adult child who lives abroad, and a special needs child who lives in another part of the US. He and his wife like to enjoy life! I take off a lot of time -- also, simply to enjoy life! For me, I think this was due to several reasons, the most important of which was taking more time off to spend with my daughter before she relocated overseas. I couldn't be more glad I did that.

I also forgot how to truly enjoy myself outside of work to some extent, so I am glad I re-learned that. Since then, I've taken more and more time off. Even though I "take off" 6 weeks in the summer and relocate, I still work. However, I consider it "time off" because I only work around my schedule for those 6 weeks and only when I want to. I do the same thing in the winter, but not for 6 weeks. But I do take off extended time in the winter, as well as long weekends. I would say if you add it all up, I probably work between 9 and 10 months a year. Don't get me wrong, I still have a passion for what I do, and I still love what I do every single day -- well, almost every single day, LOL -- but taking time off is important. It allows me to get space and distance from the day to day stuff, regardless of how much I love it, and it also allows me to re-charge. And it also allows me to enjoy life. I am in the second half of the game, LOL, so enjoying life will become more and more important. I don't see myself ever retiring full-time because I love what I do.

I am very blessed that I've been able to build the kind of business where I am never really short of work/business, and I get to pick and choose who I work with. I used to meet with 30 to 36 new potential clients per year, and would end up choosing and working with about 10 to 12 of them. Most of those potential new clients are what I refer to as "prestige introductions" and usually they are from accountants or attorneys. I should do more of my own "business development" and get more "prestige introductions" from my clients, but the ones from the accountants/attorneys come in regularly and they keep me more than busy enough.

I see successful producers all the time, very often, who work and work, and work, and they love it, and they still have that passion -- but often they just don't know how to enjoy themselves. I learned a lot about this early on when I enrolled in Dan Sullivan's Strategic Coach program. I also learned a lot more about it -- by taking time off and enjoying life! LOL. Ladies and Gentlemen, don't let the days pass you by...Go out and enjoy life! It's precious! One thing God is not making any more of for us is time! All the best!

100%

Strategic coach really helped me as well. To this day, I try to run my schedule that way.

I've known too many people who may have made great money but died within 10 years of retirement. Forget that.

I complain when things get too busy but that's a time to really work. Then when things slow down, instead of fretting about your business you can just enjoy yourself and reset for the next sprint.

Even organizing your calendar for the year can be helpful in this regard. Knowing that you have large blocks of "down time" makes it so much easier to pursue growth at other times.
