A friend told me that someone she works with adopted a dog from Puerto Rico. For the first month or so the dog was moping around and did not responding to commands. One day this person happened to be surfing on the TV and came across a Spanish language TV station (in New York) and the dog perked up. Apparently it could only understand commands in Spanish. She swears this is not apocryphal.
BTW many police departments train their dogs to respond only to commands in German in order to thwart someone trying to befuddle the dogs.
