Is My Car Insured if My Live-In Fiance Drives It?

My fiance and I have lived together in California for 2+ years. We want to share an auto insurance policy to save premium dollars. While we still have separate policies, is she and my car covered if she gets into an accident while driving my car? Does it make a difference whether I list her as a driver of my car?

Please advise.
Thanks.

On most policies, she would not be covered on your policy, but may be covered driving your car on her policy. These situations get strange.

Most policies allow for permissive drivers, i.e., someone who rarely drives your car drives it would be covered. Permissive driver rules exclude anyone who regularly drives your car OR who lives in your household. Because of this, she would have to be listed on your policy to be covered.

Her policy MAY cover her driving another vehicle, if she doesn't routinely drive it. Again, you tend to fall into the 'live-in' trap.

Its best to have 1 policy that covers both of you on both cars. Its frequently much cheaper as well.

Don't know in your state, but one of you will need to have ownership interest to add both cars under one policy. So either you need to put your name on her auto or hers on your auto. Although some carriers don't care.

I think you're talking about a slightly different situation. In order for her to get paid the check in an accident she would need ownership info, in order for the claim itself to be covered (check goes to owner of vehicle) they only need to be listed on the policy as Dan pointed out.

The op was asking about combining two policies into one. That was what my answer was in regards to. Typically nonmarried people can not combine two cars into one policy if each of them individually own their car. Some companies are OK with fiancée though. The op wasn't asking to add his fiancee as another listed driver, he wants to add her car too.

Here in Florida, Progressive and some other companies allow for a 2nd named insured. I believe the only drawback is that the 2nd named insured can't remove the 1st named insured whereas the 1st named insured can remove the 2nd named insured in the case of a nasty breakup or something.

If you get your name on her title and do it that way, you'll have to watch out because the policy language might have certain applications of coverage that only apply to the named insured and spouse. She wouldn't be covered during those instances.

It all depends on the Insurance company. Most companies will cover her while driving your car with your permission. Feel free to contact me with more detail if you like since I do insurance in CA and AZ.:cool::no:

Thanks for all of your input. Much appreciated. I'm going to just make sure that each of us are listed as drivers on the others' policy until we share one. That takes all the speculation out of the discussion.

Generally their isn't a premium difference if you add the other driver to your policy as long as there are no chargeable accidents or moving violations.

"On most policies, she would not be covered on your policy, but may be covered driving your car on her policy."

Actually, the opposite is usually true. The individual's policy typically doesn't cover their use of any vehicle available for their regular use. When driving the other person's auto, you are likely covered only under their policy.
