Lesson Learned

Last week, I was enrolling employees of a business that had agreed to do business with me and Colonial insurance. After I was done I went across the street to a restaurant to get a bite to eat. I knew the owners because I had sold them cars in the past.

I asked them about their insurance, and employee benefits, and was told to come up with something and get back with them. I called and set an appointment with them for a couple of weeks ago.

The wife, Pam, called me and cancelled the meeting because she had another engagement and wouldn't be in. We agreed that we would reschedule soon.

Her husband, Harry, was killed in a motorcycle accident yesterday.


My last death claim was on a 42 male that had a motorcycle wreck and then was unplugged and died. I think if you own a motorcycle you should be required to have life insurance and be an organ donor. I was able to give the family $116,800.
Long story behind this case, but everytime I see someone on a motorcycle, I think behind their back, there goes another organ donor and I hope they have life insurance.

I have had multiple clients die on me. I have lost multiple deals because prospects died on me.

I had not only a client but a good friend die a couple of months ago. We were having a conversation on the phone about possible cost reductions with his sons on the health plan. He has a coughing fit on the phone so bad I told him to call me back. 3 weeks later he is diagnosed with cancer. The tumor was blocking one of his lungs. He died two months later. The horrible part from an insurance standpoint is he cashed out his whole life policy that had a death benefit of $500,000 which was with another agent. I was able to secure about $30,000 for the family from group life and aflac.

I had a great group client where the senior partner died and the other partner gave the AOR to his buddy.

I was working a group deal where the owner has a heart attack and dies while we had applications in underwriting. He was 42 years old.
