I always hear FE agents say that it is best to have a territory that is 100 miles or more away from home. I am curious to know why and are there any FE agents that have broken the "rule" and work locally and is having success? :1baffled:

Working away from home gives YOU the agent a sense of urgency. You are forced to work more efficently and don't have the distractions of being home with the family (if working out of hotels each week.)

Working near home base is much less drive time and gas/hotel expense. You can work around YOUR schedule and can easily replace the business of the Traveling Salesman policies you come across.

There is an argrument for each but to me it's a no brainer to work within a 50-mile radius of home. My area is not that populated and I haven't run out of people to see in 16-years.

Just yesterday I easily replaced an application a prospect had done one day earlier with an agent that was in from the next state over. I simply asked "Would you rather have a local agent?" He said he definitely would. He called and canceled the other application and we re-applied.

I don't wish bad things on any hard working agent...but DON'T come driveing into Newbyville thinking you're going to sell any FE and not hang around to service it. Not on my watch.

Learn tele-sales and you won't have that problem. You can even sell to people in other states .

I don't know where the 100 mile thing comes from. That's too far away in my opinion. I do not work my home county just because it's easy to get off track.

If I were to dabble in FE I would work locally as well and just go see people close by whnever I had some free time. But there are agents that do work their home area and do just fine.

Most of the time I work a 50 mile radius. I do work one county that's about 70 miles away. I hit that county about every 4 months for a couple of weeks. It's my least favorite county to work because of the distance.

Newby and I were talking yesterday about one FE organization that encourages agents to be on the road 3 days a week and to stay in hotels instead of driving back home for the night. I wouldn't want to do that. I have never spent a night away from home in this business because of running appointments.

It's easy for you to not work your home county JD. There's only 14 people in it.

Is everyone in Ky. as dense as you? I'm only suggesting a "method of sales", not trying at all to ask her to join my team.

She can do tele-sales with Balt. Life, Stand. Life, Amer. Mem., and others. If she or anyone else on this forum wanted to be on my team doing tele-sales I have to say "no". As I stated on another thread I do not wish for anyone on the forum to join my tele-sales team.

Now, if they wished to do face 2 face and wanted to be "as earned" with no assistance for leads from me that would be fine.

I'm in the opposite situation. I live in a metro area with 2.2m people in it.

The only time I leave the metro area is when someone refers me to someone else.......

I work regular office hours, Monday to Friday.
