If you're talking Whole Life, not term, you'll find some of the captives are very competitive. That is why they dominate that market. Term is a different story.
What you have to think and explain to clients when you're dealing with Whole Life is that there is a small bunch of companies that are excellent choices for just about everybody out there. The differences are microscopic and a person who buys and holds from any of these companies will do just fine over time.
I would talk to my client in this way...
The thing is I can't sell you some of these because these companies require a captive agent to do that. I work with the companies who are in this group that allow independent agents to write them. You will do well with any of them. I prefer this situation because I can present this company, not because I HAVE to as a captive employee, but as your agent, I CAN CHOOSE to present this company for you.
Guardian, Ohio National, a handful of other mutual are good choices. I use Guardian for Whole Life sales. Why? Solid ratings, good history, allows independent sales. The also have a good DI contract too.
Hope this helps. When you get to the point where you're selling whole life insurance, if you're among the right circle of carriers, it will be about you.
What about Mass Mutual? Are they pretty competitive for WL?
