My personal experience with Aflac

Working with AFLAC for now

Hello all I have seen the post about AFLAC wish I would have seen it last year about this time. I have been selling AFLAC for a year now and about to go broke. Probably going to have to sell my house which is not cool with the wife.

The reason I posted here is it is like I am going to have to start all over again. I am Health and Life Lic. in TN, KY and Ohio.

I need advice on what I should do I have to keep selling the AFLAC as that is my only income for right now and I am going broke. I want to add some more lines and have contacted Assurant and just received their package.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Working with AFLAC for now

What a shame. Get with a Blue Cross agency or a Final Expense agency to start making money. I wouldn't work more than 30 days without making money. You have be a very good salesman.

Good luck.

Re: Working with AFLAC for now

First off, don't spread yourself too thin. Remain licensed only for your native state. Start there.

Secondly, get appointed with two or three health insurance companies, and start calling on small businesses, offering free, no-obigation quotes. This will lead to individual sales, as well as some small group business.

Dump AFLAC. It's not helping you at all, and don't waste any more time on it. In fact, don't even go back to the office for another PEP rally. Leave them, like an old shoe on the highway.

Health insurance will be your quickest sale. It's what most people have a question about, and will be open to a quote for.

That being said, if you are strapped for cash, get a part time job, with flexible hours, so you can work your insurance business around it, while still bringing in some "rent" money.

It can be done.

Finally, do more telemarketing and emailing of quotes, rather than driving around. People don't need to see you, and you don't need to see them. The old "belly to belly" axiom is outdated. They want your service, not your face. That will save you gas money.

Also, find a Job Seekers group in your town, and offer them Short Term Medical, for those that are on COBRA. That will be quick easy money as well.

Hope this helps.

Re: Working with AFLAC for now

I disagree with a part-time job. Say you even get a job part-time for $15/hr - which ain't gonna happen and work it for 20 hrs/wk.

That's $300 per week. The average health commish is $700. So if between extra telemarketing efforts you can land one deal every other week - there's your part-time job.

I was as cash strapped as they come when I dove out of Mega. I could deliver pizza's - get a part-time job for $10/hr or dig in and go BtoB for 4 hours a day.

I chose BtoB for 4 hours a day and made thousands a week.

Re: Working with AFLAC for now

The man needs money NOW, to pay for bills NOW. Commission checks won't come in for another two months or so.

I started working part time, so that I would have money NOW, and still be able to build my business - it can be done.

Don't go flashing money in people's faces, when they need money NOW to pay for immediate needs - mortgage/rent, groceries, utilities, gas, phone, etc.

You would be surprised how good it feels to get $250 every two weeks, while you are working on your business, knowing that commission checks take one to two months to process.

Unless, you want to pay the bills 'til the commission checks come "pouring" in.

Re: Working with AFLAC for now

If I went BtoB today I'd have commish checks within two weeks.

If he started the search for a part-time job today, got hired today and started work tomorrow it would likely be two weeks before he'd see his first check.

Only way around that - and possibly my suggestion - would be to wait tables or bartend at night.

Re: Working with AFLAC for now

I have the Ohio Lic because my District has a large acct there and he shares. I have made money with AFLAC and their kool-aid taste so good. LOL I live closer to Bowling Green, KY than Nashville, TN although I live in TN I kinda work both sides of the line.

When I call on B2B am I trying to offer individual health to the employees or should I offer group?

I am working on getting appointed with Assurant and can't find any way other than calling Humana to get appointed.

As for a part time job I have to agree I don't think the hourly thing is going to work that is also why I am thinking of downsizing for a while.

I have some money coming in I am not totally broke. Just more going out than coming in. Just know I need a change. The wife keeps a couple of kids and that takes care of utilites.

That's if he sold something TODAY, he would get paid in two weeks, and your talking about Mega Life, which is, at best, a sleazy product, and not the best entree into the legitimate health insurance business.

I delivered pizzas at night, and on the weekends. Made enough money to pay the bills, put gas in the car, and put aside some for a rainy day.

Then again, you do sell Mega Life, who's clam to fame is having those signs by the side of the road, claiming to cover everyone, for less than $150 month. What happens if they are in the hospital for an extended stay?

A part time job will give him some form of stability, in pay and work, that he won't get cold calling and figuring out plan designs and presenting to clients.

You don't also sell AMWAY do you?

The #1 reason people leave this business is because they don't have the finances to keep them afloat, and, rather than swallow some pride for a short time, they are lulled in by these "get rich quick" claims by Mega Life, UA, and others of their ilk.

The man's got a gun pointed to his head, and your handing him 5 bullets, saying, "you'll probably get the empty chamber, go on, try it."

:swoon:

Re: Working with AFLAC for now

Justin,

I agree with the gentleman who refered to money NOW. However, I also disagree with leaving Aflac. I worked for Aflac for 5 years as an associate, DSC, and RSC. Every success story about Aflac is lined with silver coatings of BS.

You have needs, bills, and responsibilities to your family. Get a job that employes you after hours or on the weekends to bring in enough til to pay the bills. I was single when I started with Aflac, and I owned my home free and clear. So when I did not make money for the first 45 days it did not really matter. I worked 70 hours a week 6 days a week. I made an outstanding income my first year with them, as well as, all following years. However, you have a wife, home, and bills. You need money now, and if you leave Aflac you sacrifice long term residuals that will make the difference in your life 5-10 years from now. My first year my residuals were less than 400.00 a month, second year they were 2,000.00, third a lot more.. What I make a month now without leaving my house could support me a lone. I branched off from Aflac and started a multi-line insurance brokerage firm. Ya health/life/p&C/aflac yeilds 10x the revenue of just aflac, but you have to build starting from somewhere. Working for Aflac allowed me to branch off into what I do now.

As for the gentleman who bragged about his thousands a week. Listing what your earning "potential" is and what he will make are two different things. You have to remember not everyone is like you. Whether you actually make "thousands" a week is irrelivant. What is relivant is that he needs to do what's best by him. Your input was good, but if doing the same thing for Aflac is not cutting it for him then why would telemarketing other products be any different. You cannot diversify and expand without a base on which to do so. Furthermore, I believe that people who speak about what they can do usually stretch the truth a bit so I do not believe your advise to be in his best interests.

Justin, either you get a second job or a different job, but remember its the long-term aflac is good for...not the short term. You will get a statement in a few months regarding your stock. Aflac's stock split 2 for 1 when I had 75 shares, my stock after 2 years was worth 218% more than it was originally. If you dream long term, and build for the short term with the vision of achieving your dreams you will succeed.

Sincerely,
Michael

Not that any of this is any of my business, and I hate to get in the middle of it, but I dont think Healthagent sells any Mega junk. I base that on having read his entire blog and several hundred of his posts here (as well as everyone elses posts).

Be that as it may, I'm kinda in the same position, but I'm not even licensed (again) yet. I am currently a Time-Warner Cable TV installer, which is kicking my kiester. Still not enough money to live off of, much less pay for License2Go and the NC State Exam.

I will be quitting this cable install crap (not enough money to pay for gas) and spinning pizzas, delivering pizzas, etc, until I get my shat together and get licensed.
