My personal experience with Aflac

Re: Here's my situation. Is AFLAC right for me?

Why limit yourself to only 2 options. I am not sure and nobody other than yourself will know if AFLAC is right for you. First questions is it captive can you only sell the Duck or can you become appointed to sell other products? Are there a lot of other insurance agents locally selling with a Life/Health Accident license. I live in Maine and Rural areas can be tough or a goldmine depending if your from the area and know people. In some parts of my state you need to be "from the county" to sell in it.

Re: Here's my situation. Is AFLAC right for me?

I wouldn't be captive, and there's nothing stopping me from selling other companies other that getting appointed with them. AFLAC was just the first I pursued. I assume once I get my licenses for Life and Health, I could sell any Life and Health?

As for your other point, I was born and raised in this area so I know a number of people and am familiar with the town layouts and businesses around. I suppose that could be a benefit. I know there are about 6 or 7 agents in the area actively selling AFLAC. There are others who are set with their clients and are no longer pursuing new business. For the area, does that seem like over saturation?

It could be...I don't do a lot of voluntary benefit products. For that you would want business to call on...But there could be life, med sup, annuity business abound in your area I don't know

Re: Here's my situation. Is AFLAC right for me?

You will be knocking on doors and walking into businesses that have seen 3 AFLAC newbys already this month, if not this week.

The first thing they will suggest doing is writing insurance on yourself so you can get some income flow started.

There are lots of opportunities for a guy like you. Get your licenses and they will appear. Don't delay because Medicare Annual Election Period starts in a few months and you have to get appointed with a few companies to sell that; for example.

As far as the jobs, I would consider doing the call center and work on becoming an independent insurance agent. You will then give yourself some time to find a niche. I did the AFLAC thing for 2 weeks. One of the weeks was in office training and the next week I went out to a group with my DM, she let me get credit for a couple policies she helped me write, and then the next day she dropped me off at the end of a street and told me to stop in at every business and solicit them. The businesses were less than hospitable since I wasnt the first new AFLAC guy they had seen that week...

I quit the next day. ;)

Re: Here's my situation. Is AFLAC right for me?

I agree with Chuck, definately get your license and work at the call center while you are building yourself a insurance business.
I too signed up with AFLAC and was basically given the same type of training as previous posters have stated. It works for some but it is true that when you are cold calling on the businesses you better believe you are not the first AFLAC sales person they have seen.

Re: Here's my situation. Is AFLAC right for me?

Based upon your situation Aflac doesn't seem like a terrible choice but talk to Combined, Western Southern, or Metlife if they are in your area.

Re: Here's my situation. Is AFLAC right for me?

This is my quandry, choosing between these two scenarios: safe and cheap, or risky and potentially rewarding. If only that other job had worked out!
Not trying to be a jerk, just honest. If you are not 100% committed this won't work. You have to decide it will be your last career stop and do everything in your power to make it go. If you aren't willing to fully committ, don't even bother, it won't work. There is a 90% failure rate in this business, what are you going to do the other 90% didn't?
