My personal experience with Aflac

Re: Working for Aflac?

I've been working for Aflac for about a year now. I also sell major medical and medicare supplements on the side. I was an accountant for a law firm before joining Aflac (bachelor degrees in accounting and finance).

Insurance in general is a saturated market. It doesn't matter if it's supplemental, major med, p&c, etc.

To say that most people who didn't succeed with Aflac don't have "drive" is completely unfair.

First, there is only a finite number of businesses. Most of the larger accounts that can sustain an agent have already been nabbed. Most of the left over businesses only pay their employees minimum wage. Try selling Aflac to a single mom making $1,000 a month. Better yet, I'd like to see someone on this board try to live on $1,000 a month. In other words, most new agents are left with the table scraps.

Second, most new agents will get one or two new accounts before their personal bills begin to stack up, forcing them to quit. These accounts become headquarter accounts that local management get to service. If a regional manager hires 100 new agents in a year...Well, you get the idea. Hypothetically speaking, assume there's 100 potential accounts in a region. It takes 20 accounts to make a living with Aflac. Instead of hiring 5 talented and hardworking agents to go after these 100 accounts, the regional manager will hire 25 agents with a pulse. Consequently, no one agent is able to get enough accounts to make a living. Twenty five new agents with 5 accounts suddenly become one regional manager in control of 100 new accounts and 25 people reading the employment section in their local newspaper. The regional manager usually turns these new accounts over to a spouse or other family member to service.

I don't mean to sound like I'm running Aflac into the ground. I personally feel Aflac is the best supplemental insurance company on the market. Their brand recognize is a strong selling tool. I hope to have a long tern career working for Aflac. However, it would wrong of me to simply point out the positives, while conveniently overlooking the fact that the odds are stacked against new agents. Most of the few who will succeed will simply luck out and be in the right place at the right time.

I've been with Aflac over a year and haven't made enough to live on. Although I've opened several groups. I plan to give Aflac another year. My regional manager said to give it two years. I have a slight advantage over the average new Aflac agent. I cashed out a retirement account after I was laid off from my previous job. I'm also an officer in the National Guard. So I have extra income to survive while I'm building my business.

Going with AFLAC?

Hello just wanted to get some info on if anyone had gone captive or worked for AFLAC? I am new to insurance and want to find best option for me to get best training, try to get good starting base salary, and best support and ongoing training in first couple years. I want to sell insurance for a bit then work and train my way into financial planning area and do both. I dont initially want o go on my own for some years so i can get the support i need just starting out. if not AFLAC, what company out there would be best to get foot in the door and have most success with, with the areas im looking for. A starting base salary/pay is going to be crucial for me as im learning the first 6-12 months.

Re: Going with AFLAC?

dang another aflac thread....go sell real insurance....

Re: Going with AFLAC?

Use the search function and read all the posts about all the companies and make up your own mind if you really want to be associated with companies like AFLAC...ect.

After a little reading, you may decide to sell real insurance. ;)

Based upon your interest AFLAC is the last place to be. Try Metlife, NYL, NWFN, MM, or Guardian.

Re: Going with AFLAC?

Ok great Xrac, thats what I was looking for. What one you think out of those has best place to start for new agent? I wasnt sold on AFLAC by no means just wanted to get info.

Re: Going with AFLAC?

Any of them would be a great place to learn the business or make a career. It is really more who is hiring, than who is the best. Find the best opportunity and offer and go for it.

Re: Going with AFLAC?

I would look for the most successful office with people that I feel that I could learn from. Look for someone to be your mentor that you can learn the trade from. Split cases with them. I lean toward Guardian and MM because they give their agents more autonomy and freedom but finding a place that you can learn is number one. Once you know how to sell you can do anything you want.
