I have been in the insurance business for three years and have worked for a financial services company that offered health as a side line (did not like doing financial services so I left), an independent agency whose main focus was p&c and currently as a wholesale rep for a national carrier with a main interest in small group health. I have always liked the life and health side from the start and have become very well versed in most of the ins and outs of how to sell it and where to send the business to get it issued. My current employer has been in a death spiral since I got here (I was told at hire that there were many changes coming to make us competitive in the market place again within 6 months). We do business in Michigan almost exclusively with our agent base and that does not help given the economic conditions of the state. I have an opportunity to go somewhat self employed with a outfit called USA Benefits Group. They will supply some nifty tools and other small things that I can use to help sell for about $50 per month (this also includes e&o coverage) so I do not think they are one of those set ups that are in business to make money off the agents buy selling them crap. I would own all my business and they would receive a small over ride on my production. Commissions would range from 16% to 30% (depending on the carrier) and they have all the carriers I want and would be willing to contract with the 2 others I would like to have. I would be doing business in 5 states to start. I know it depends on the individual, but is it realistic to assume that I could issue 8 to 10 deals a month?

Is USA Benefits a GA? Make sure you own the accounts you write. 8-10 deals a month seems a little aggressive,
Although it is a great opportunity in Michigan right now to help these businesses save money on their health benefits.
