I'm a web developer seeking to generate leads. I don't have much start up money so I'm trying to do some research on the best ways to get my websites going.

The problem is that advertising through Google has gotten way too expensive, and I'm not familiar with "cold calling". Adwords competition between websites has made the cost of advertising exceed the revenue from sales to Netquote, Insureme, etc.. Adwords charges around $15+ a click for good words. Only about 60% of those clicks actually result in good leads for Auto, and they only sell at around $8-$10 if you sell them to Netquote or Insureme.

Would calling be a better alternative to advertising online? I heard good marketers can get at least one lead per hour.

It's gotten to the point where I've thought of just working with Farmers and becoming an agent myself.

Why do they have to be good leads. I think some of the lead sellers take the names out of the phone book.

I usually generate a couple of leads per day on my website. I also use adwords to generate the majority of my visits. I'd recommend focusing on cheaper (less popular) keywords. Usually, i'm spending about $1 per click..

Research all your possible competitors and use the name of their companies as keywords. It works well...

I've heard that people are getting sued for using competitor names for keywords. I know AAA, hartford, and geico are cracking down on folks using their names in adwords.

I tried sman, thall and policy doctor since they are competitors and got nothing.

When I use greensky I get leads from folks wanting Viagra.

I don't think that strategy works very well.

You mention two ways of monetizing your site: sell to lead sites, or convert the leads yourself. If you background is in web development you might find better success in driving down your cost to acquire leads and sell to the lead sites.

Converting the leads yourself is a huge undertaking. Read through the insurance leads threads to see how difficult selling insurance can be even for veteran sales people.

Leverage what you already know.

Can you give me a list of such web sites? If I sign agreement with them I will pay you $50 per every company you referred.

Create a website, target very specific keyword terms, and then do SEO for those terms. Since you're sticking with local terms, you shouldn't run into any extremely heavy SEO needs (unless you're doing it for a major city).

I'd recommend this way as it is pretty long term once you get to the top. Unless you completely stop doing SEO on the site once you rank, you will more than likely hold your position. You can also run localized PPC campaigns, and these should last you a bit longer than normal keyword PPC because of the fewer clicks and less daily search traffic.

Hopefully this helps a bit!
