Newbie Needs Advice on Selling Forethought FE

Glad you like this thread and that it is helpful. I am in no way experienced enough to answer your question. I have only been doing this about a month. The others on here are so informative and experienced. My guess is as the gurus in here advised me, is stick to pre-need learn that backwards and forwards then add other things to your basket. You don't want to be a Jack or Jill of all trades and master at none. Good luck to you.

Do a search on the word "Preneed" and you will find all the threads I have written about it.

I have been successful with it for over 15 years. The first eight years I did Preneed only. I made a great living doing just that. Now I own my own agency and Preneed is more secondary to me. I believe that Preneed is a GREAT way to get your start and make fantastic money without all the headaches that come with more traditional insurance.

If you want more to cross sell, I would pick up mausoleums, cemetery property and monuments for add ons way before I would add FE. It goes along more with what you are selling.

You should be making over $1,000 per week very quickly with no expenses and build from there.

Which would you think is easier to prospect for, FE or PN?

If you are at a great funeral home, preneed is VERY easy. You don't have people calling in and walking in the door wanting to buy your product with FE.

If you are in an undesirable funeral home, preneed is difficult.

Thanks newby. Ur info was very useful. How do I go about getting the ability to do cemetery or mausoleums once I'm ready?

The easiest way is if your funeral home owner also owns a cemetery. I assume yours doesn't.

Ask him which cemeteries are NOT owned by his competitors. Some cemeteries are NOT connected with any funeral home. Approach one or more of those cemeteries and tell them you are selling Preneed funeral in the same town and you would like to be a straight commissioned field salesperson for their cemetery. Many cemeteries would be thrilled to have you do it.

If that doesn't work, you can self- broker cemetery. You will run across a lot of people that have cemetery spaces or mausoleums they aren't going to use. People move, divorce, change their minds, etc. they would like to convert that cemetery property to fast cash. You can buy it from them for 25 to 50% of current value. You will ALWAYS run across people who are wanting to buy cemetery spaces when you are selling Preneed funerals. So you offer them a better deal than the cemetery.

I have a friend in Tennessee that supplements his Preneed income by flipping mausoleum crypts that people want to sell. He makes an extra $25,000 or so a year doing that. He has more buyers lined up than sellers so even though he's investing several thousand dollars on each one, he usually has it sold within a week.

There are a few websites that allow you to buy and sell crypts, cemetery plots, caskets etc.
I wonder what a good mark-up percentage would be to resell a casket, plot etc.

I've never heard of anyone RESELLING a casket.
