Mark,
I now live in South Florida, about 40 miles north of West Palm. When would be a good time for me to get some eggs and put them outside?
Will they do well if I just put them outside or do I need to keep them contained for a while and feed the babies to give them a good start? I never see any moths or bugs around the yard light at night but we have hundreds of little lizards that are everywhere.
You can go ahead and buy them from ebay right now. Most of the time the sellers will sell 10 eggs at a time. .50 to 1 dollar each.
Being that you live down there, I would think they could start hatching as early as March. If you place them outside, you will be able to tell if they have hatched. You will see a little hole in the bottom with a hair like poking out that they climb down.
I recommend that you dont just place them outside, so that you can get to see them and release them.
In this video you can see what I had them in. I release about 5,000 every year. I can always find the eggs on bushes the next year and start it all over again. But I do buy about 100 eggs every year to save some time.
These are the containers I use for the ones that I dont release and keep.
You can buy wingless fruit flies on ebay for about $6 for a 3 month supply. This will take care of them to start with. After about 2 weeks, they will start eating each other. It wont take long to end up with just 3 big ones. They will molt a couple of times. Make sure you have sticks in the container to do help them do this.
Once they get big you can start feeding them crickets, flies, moths and all kinds of stuff.
If you are going to keep them. You will need to keep a light bulb on them most of the time. You will need to spray them about every 2 days with clean water. Just a mist.
If you release them, make sure and keep the outside light on, so they will come to it and you can watch them.
