Offsite SEO Tips

Dam I am confused? I have never seen Rel="nofollow" before or ever heard of it. When I post to directories I do the following

That would give me full credit because the whole URL is there correct. Let me know where I am wrong on this?

You wouldn't see it unless you look at the code. On Firefox and Internet Explorer you can view the code (they call it the "source") by clicking on the appropriate choice in the View menu.

Unless you know HTML well you will see a bunch of characters that seem random. For these purposes that isn't important. Just use the "Find" function to search for "nofollow" if it is there, the link will have less value.

Do most directories have no follow? What about social bookmarks etc....

hey Dave,

A lot of sites do and a lot don't. I took a look at your site and according to Yahoo, you only have 110 backlinks to your main page of your site (that's how many websites THEY count that link to you). Most are coming from blogs. You have some from Social sites. I noticed Folkd is on there. They are a good one because they do NOT use "no follow" tags.

Also, I would edit your Brownbook and Jumptag listings because you currently have 1 link from each, but you can increase this. I discovered that when you're filling out their "Add a business" form, they usually ask you to enter in keywords or tags associated with your business - the more you enter in there, the more links you'll get. I have about 50 from Brownbook and almost equal from Jumptags.

Good job discovering those 2 - I know a lot of people don't know about them!

Also, you have some from Mojopages and tons from this forum. (Site Explorer - Search Results)

Thanks for the info sunkist219! I will add more tags to brownbook and jumptags. I did not know the more tags you list the more back links you get. Now if you can tell me how to get into DMOZ that would be really cool. I submitted I think three times already and heard nothing from them.

DMOZ is overrated, but the reason why you probably didn't get accepted is because they probably don't have an editor for your category. What category did you submit to? Go to that category, and look at the bottom of the page. If there is a little "volunteer to edit this category" button, it means there is no editor. I'm not in DMOZ yet either, but what I did recently is go up a category until I found a section that DOES have an editor, and I submitted myself there. I haven't heard anything yet though.

I cannot remember what section I submitted it to. You would think since that part of the directory is not very popular they would review our health insurance submissions fast.

Yeah unfortunately the opposite is true - if there isn't an editor for your category - your listing won't get reviewed EVER.

I have submitted my website to dmoz three times as well over the last year.

Last month, a dmoz bot hit my site for first time.

I'm hoping that is the beginning of an entry into the dmoz.

Here is a piece of software I use to submit to directories, you can use it for both search and articles directories. I haven't done any articles directories with it yet.

It contains about 4000 search directories, and 600 or so article directories. Only about 1500 of the search directories are free directories. That's all I use.

I like the software because I can add my own directories to the database. Often when you submit to a directory, they send you an e-mail with other directories you can submit to.

I have added my main site to the entire list, and I'm working on doing the same thing with my other sites. I would guess I have obtained 400 or so backlinks from this software in the process to date. Sometimes it will take up to 120 days to get listed in some directories, others, the next day.

There are other options for submission software, but I found this to be the best of the 5 to 7 programs or so I have tried. You can submit to 50 directories in about 10 minutes once you get the hang of it.

I would submit to 30 to 50 directories a week until you have gone through the entire database, in the mean time you will probably receive e-mails with another 500 directories or so to add to that list.

I would recommend that you set up a separate e-mail address just for this purpose. You will receive a e-mail from almost every directory you submit to plus some spam that will be sure to follow.
